The Maverick's: They're Back Again!
Created: 14/08/07
Maverick is an entertaining cowboy comedy that is a reprise of a popular television western which, surprisingly, Richard Donner directs. Viewers who remember the earlier series are brought back by James Garner who played the principal Maverick on television. For the younger generation we have the comedic energy of Mel Gibson and the sparkle of Jodi Foster.
This saga is about a poker tournament that has as many plot twists as a Chinese pretzel. Both Garner and James Coburn in one of his last roles bring a certain gravitas to the film. Albert Molina becomes a recognizable face to movie audiences due to his performance as the evil bandito, Angel — now there's a contrast! Jodi Foster is the sly con woman, and Graham Greene again plays a Native American this one with a rather smarmy personality.
How does it turnout? I'd be doing you a disservice if I told. It's a fun and entertaining western with an interesting spin on the Maverick role(s). I enjoyed it, I think you will.

Lighthearted Fun Western-Style Movie

Great movie! This movie has something for everyone! Clean humor that is funny, easy to follow and enjoyable story line, beautiful scenery, good music, and great characters. There is even a quick nod to the humorous duo of Lethal Weapon movies (Danny Glover and Mel Gibson). Maverick has all of the feel of western movies with beautiful scenery, stagecoach and wagon trains, dusty western towns, Indians, horses, and poker.
This is a great, light-hearted movie perfect for an evening of laughs and adventure.

A funny western with a great cast

A movie not to be taken too seriously, Maverick is a goofy western about cheats and gamblers competing for the grand prize at a river casino poker tournament. The plot takes many different silly and unexpected turns as Maverick makes his way to the Tournament. It stars Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, James Garner, James Coburn, Alfred Molina, and cameos by a few actors. Definitely a must have for Mel Gibson fans, or anyone who enjoys a good movie that will make you laugh.

I like Westerns. I like the Maverick TV series. I like Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, and James Garner. I have seen this movie several times and always enjoy it. The humorous tilt of the movie is in keeping with the TV Maverick. The twists in the plot keep me entertained. What's not to like? It's fun.

Not your typical Mel Gibson movie but let me tell you if you haven't seen it go out and buy it. You will be glad you did. With great plot turn to keep you interested, and enough one liners to warrant watching a dozen times this movie is a classic.
The end is unexpected until the last 20 minutes then you figure it out but it is still a great flick.
I am still trying to summon that ace of spades when I need it like he does though.
