Movie synopsis

Lars Von Trier's MELANCHOLIA, a meditation on depression and the end of the world, stars Kirsten Dunst as an emotionally troubled newlywed named Justine, whose sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) throws her a lavish wedding party. While her lack of emotional stability begins to take a toll on Justine's new marriage as well as the party -- and old wounds are exposed -- Claire's wealthy husband John (Kiefer Sutherland) also knows a great deal about a planet that is on a possible collision course with Earth, further muddying the waters. The second half of the movie focuses on Claire, who ends up taking her sister in after the marriage collapses, and also begins to fear that John is hiding apocalyptically bad news. John Hurt and Charlotte Rampling co-star. MELANCHOLIA screened at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.

Total Film - Matt Glasby (10/01/2011)

"MELANCHOLIA is gorgeous to look at, deeply moody and atmospheric, and it's always in on its own grim little joke."

"[H]auntingly beautiful....An impending apocalypse is evoked with an extraordinary mixture of gravity and grave playfulness."
Wall Street Journal (11/11/2011)

Sight and Sound - Tony Rayns (10/01/2011)

This is an abstract sci fi movie about the end of the world, Justine and Michael are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister Claire, and brother-in-law John. Despite Claire's best efforts, the wedding is a fiasco, with family tensions mounting and relationships fraying. Meanwhile, a planet called Melancholia is heading directly towards Earth. Now be patient! It's a long movie! The first part is about one sister and the second part is about the other. each deal with the catastrophe in different ways. FYI for those that care, It is 100% clear Kerstin Dunst got a breast enhancement operation. Hey, I still remember the little angel Mary Jane in the Spiderman movie. Mary Jane DID NOT LOOK LIKE THAT! You will see the difference as Ms Dunst in a brief nude scene. The move was very very good and worth the ebay buy. Science wiz folks will spot a few 'unrealistic' items but it's a movie! Enjoy. DTD

Okay, it was odd, voyeuristic and strange... even slow at times... but the entertaining premises... enough to capture my interest and watch till the end.

It was well done... but an odd subject. Kind of like The Impossible, or Silence of the Lambs. Apocalyptic and a bit morose ???

It takes on the large subject of "end of world" and rather than watching a city [as most films do] be obliterated by the end of the world, this films focuses on a wedding party, mostly family the morning after the gala.

It is an intimate portrayal of facing certain death. Not a lite happy subject. But a well made film all the same. And ultimately entertaining.

Watch it, see what you think.

I am a serious film collector and only purchase films that I've seen or reviewed before I purchase it..This film is a end of the world theme and it is a very unusual story telling technique and filmed in a very opulant manner. The story weaves around two main characters that have very unusual mannerisms in their life and entertwine between themselves and the story line - end of the world..
The film after going through from beginning to end was very thought provoking and affected me in its melancolia..It felt like a new and wonderful manner of creating a movie with out the usual paint by numbers techniques...I love this director..
