My Big Fat Greek Wedding (DVD, 2003, Widescreen & Full Frame)

Joel Zwick, Nia Vardalos|Theatrical release: 2002 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Toula Portakalos (Nia Vardalos) feels trapped in her large Greek family, where women are expected to do only three things: "marry Greek men, have Greek babies, and feed everyone until the day they die." Rebelling against this fate, Toula quits the family restaurant, goes to college, fixes her hair, and falls in love with Ian (John Corbett), a guy who is way-too-good-to-be-true, and not Greek. This horrifies Toula's Greek culture-crazed father (Michael Constantine) and sets off a major culture clash between her loud, eccentric family (whose activities include roasting whole lambs on the front-yard barbecue spit) and Ian's subdued, overcivilized Anglo-Saxon parents.Based on Vardalos' own autobiographical one-woman play, MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING is that rare romantic comedy that has the courage to trust its simple, human story and not resort to overwrought Hollywood sentimentality and phony glamour (all the characters in the film look and act like real people). It's also filled with big, fat, crowd-pleasing laughs, making it a wedding most worth attending. Co-produced by Tom Hanks, the movie is set in Chicago, but was filmed in Toronto. The spirited cast includes Lainie Kazan and Andrea Martin (of SCTV fame) as Toula's mom and aunt.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding - The Family Takes Over...

Created: 08/10/06
The movie is about the life of Toula, a 30 year Greek girl who is still single, which means she's a failure. Her mother, aunts, sister and all of her cousins are married and are making Greek babies and feeding everyone in the family. Her father is upset because she looks "old" and even his bottle of Windex cannot cure that problem!

Soon Toula meets Ian Miller who is not Greek, yet in his love for Toula, embraces her culture and family. The story revolves around their meeting and courtship and eventually their marriage which the family completely takes over from her mother picking out the wedding invitations complete with the Greek Flag on its facing (how romantic is that, I wonder???); her cousin Nicki picking out the most hideous of bridesmaids dresses (blue puffs); her family decking her out in the wedding finery turning her into a "snow beast" complete with Greek makeup.

The movie is a wonderful portrayal of a family's love for each member in the family and how each interrelates with one another. And through it all, Toula faces each moment with a loving passion that would have made most women into the ultimate Bridezilla. The one liners from her father, Gus, and his Windex cure-all are hysterical, Aunt Vula-the dingbat Whoa is me!, and her Yaya (Grandmother)'s antics are comical. But it is that Ian truly loving Toula and embracing a culture he knows nothing about that makes me love this movie. He is an only child and he and his parents are truly overwhelmed by meeting the entire family of Gus, Maria (her mother), her sister, brother, Uncles, Aunts, and cousins, Nick, Nick, Nick, Nick, Nick, Nicki and Nick (no, I'm not having problem with my keyboard. Nia names everyone in her family in this movie! It is truly one of the best of the feel good flicks that you'll watch.

I saw this movie once and had to purchase it for my video collection. There are some serious poignant scenes and a ton of laughs (Frump Girl) and to watch it, I can see parts of that movie within my family and the strange one down the street.

After you watch it on DVD, watch it again with the commentary from Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, and the director Joel Zwick. There is so much insight to the movie about Nia's own experience in her own (Greek Culture and) marriage to her real life Ian (Ian Gomez). I think aside from the fact that it is a really fun-loving movie is the fact that although it is embellished with comedy it is Nia's story and she does find her prince charming in real life. Additionally, Ian Gomez does appear in the movie as the character Ian's best friend.

I love this movie because its so wonderful it is one of five movies i can watch over and over without getting bored. I love romantic movies that no matter what the two people individuals stay together. In this movie the character toula is greek and the middle child. Her culture like others require her to finish highschool and find a greek husband and have greek children. Toula finished high school but didnt find a husband. in the meantime she work in her fathers diner. She decided to do something that most greek women are forbbided to do and thats go to college, after that her life changes and she meets Ian. Ian is not greek, so there are obstacles.I decided to buy it because i constantly saw it on tv and scenes were taken out, I like to watch all the scenes its more exciting that way. I recommended this movies to all of my friends and most of them loved it but not as much as me

Absolutely terrific!!!

I think this movie; "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is terrific. This is not a formulaic romantic comedy. The leading characters, Toula and Ian like each other right away, and they tell each other so. The film takes its time, and we get the pleasure of seeing Toula and Ian fall in love instead of having to assume it somehow happens off camera.
This movie isn’t only funny but really hits home for those of us that are 1st, 2nd, or 3rd generation immigrants. Greek or otherwise, this movie is a real 10 for me!

Roll on the ground funny: must see!

This is one of my most favorite movies of all time! The film weaves the story of a young Greek girl who seeks to find love and happiness. She maneuvers her way out of the family restaurant business and finds a boyfriend. The movie is filled with many jokes related to the Greek heritage and this woman's large Greek family. My favorite joke is regarding her father's use of Windex to heal cuts, wounds, and aching joints. A wonderfully funny and romantic comedy -- buy it today, you won't be sorry!

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Created: 09/05/07
This is a great "chick flick" comedy. It is about a young Greek/American woman who lives with her parents and works at her father's restaurant. One day she sheds her mousy image, goes back to school and changes her career. The she meets and falls in love with a waspy professor and the meeting of families and wedding make for a very funny movie. The character's are very believable and you feel like one of their family. This is a movie you will watch over and over again.
