Mountain: Leslie West (vocals, guitar); Steve Knight (keyboards); Felix Pappalardi (bass, background vocals); Corky Laing (drums).Recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York in 1971. Originally released on Windfall (5500). Includes liner notes by Corey Laing.Personnel: Leslie West (vocals, guitar); Felix Pappalardi (vocals); Steve Knight (keyboards); Corky Laing (drums).Liner Note Authors: Corky Laing; Leslie West.Recording information: The Record Plant, N.Y.C.Photographers: Gail Collins; Jill Furmanovsky; Jim Cummins.Following the success of Climbing! and appearances at Woodstock and other outdoor festivals of the day, Mountain recorded more of the same for Nantucket Sleighride. The title track is a nice mixture of classical-leaning intertwined with moderate rock; both "Don't Look Around" and "The Animal Trainer and the Toad" continue on the hard rock path so well-worn by this band. Not groundbreaking, but it is well worth listening to. ~ James Chrispell

CLASSIC ROCK AT ITS BEST!

Created: 25/12/05
Its too bad that when the band MOUNTAIN comes up in conversation about classic rock, the only song most people are familiar with is MISSISSIPPI QUEEN. It is a great, song but the first 3 mountain albums ,NANTUCKET SLEIGHRIDE being the third , are some of the best classic hard rock albums ever. The guitar work of Leslie West is awesome. The band had a unique sound like no other. It blended hard bluesy rock with trippy melodic rock. The title track is an epic, dreamy journey that evovles into an incredible hard rock mind blower! The bass player, Felix Papallardi who produced many CREAM albums wrote many of the songs on this album and produced it as well. Many in the music business said he was a musical genius and it shows. He was shot and killed by his girlfriend in the early 80s in Manhattan. Drummer Corky Lang is tight and solid. I cant recommend this album enough.

Nantucket Sleighride by Mountain

I ran into Leslie in a guitar shop in 1971/72 in Ossining, NY, where I got a lot of my gear. Now he's appearing in Manny's NYC this Thurs where my son works. I love N.S. and suggest to you that it is their best work. Seering guitar, driving rhythm, syncopation, stop and goes, virile harmonies, stright-forward ballsy bluesy jam. Songs are well-written, produced, performed and sequenced. Album Art, liners and enclosed portraits round out a very special package. There is no substitute for the vinyl.
