Her supremely crafted songs quickly became anthems, making her the first popular African-American singer-songwriter to reach mega-stardom. Seven years later, Chapman's fourth album, NEW BEGINNING, arrives with new stories, while diving into previously unexplored territory.Chapman's knack for gripping storytelling is most evident on the chilling "Cold Feet," which describes the dangerous choices rational people often make to get ahead. Her protagonist takes only one risk in an otherwise peril-free life, but it turns out to be a fatal one. While we've all heard similar tales, "Cold Feet" forces even the most self-assured listener to examine his/her own decisions. Where NEW BEGINNING differs from her earlier work is Tracy's willingness to turn the microscope on herself. "Heaven's Here On Earth" affords us a glimpse of her spiritual side, while "At This Point In My Life" is Chapman at her most introspective. These songs show us more of Tracy Chapman than we've seen before and, in the tradition of the best singer-songwriters, force us to examine ourselves.

You go Girl!

Created: 08/05/07
Tracy Chapman has always been a bit too mellow for my tastes, but I decided to give this album a try...I was not disappointed. Her unique vocal style and her musical craftmanship is very unique, soothing and talented. You can feel power, talent and raw emotion seeping from this woman. She is a good, talented female singer who has something important to say in each and every one of her songs by both, her music and her lyrics. Why can't we have more intelligent and talented female musicians like Tracy today?

Same old same old

Created: 08/08/06
If you like everything else that Tracy has done, you'll like this CD. If variety is the spice of life, this album defines bland. Her extreme positions are repeated over & over until they are numbing, not thought-provoking. I like an artist the tackles controversy, opposes the majority, and gives them hell, but Tracy, at best, gives them heck. Let's have some music here, not repetitive recitations.
On the plus side, she has an engaging personality that comes across in her performance. Her sincerity is refreshing, if not persuasive. If she gets some production help to be more musical, she could be dynamite.
