It's a blast from the past. In the 80's you probably played Super Mario Brothers on the original Nintendo Entertainment System. Over 19 years have passed since the last 2D-side scrolling installment of the Mario Brothers Series was released on a gaming console, Nintendo now brings you New Super Mario Brothers Wii.
This game is based off of what Nintendo started in 1985. The game play is very similar to Super Mario Brothers 3 and World (SNES). There are One to Four players. This time around Nintendo has you all playing together (cooperative or competitive) - alternating version is not available - no need to wait for your turn to play. You can play as either Mario, Luigi, or 2 different Toads.
This game goes back to Nintendo's and Mario's roots for what jump started the video game industry. If you are familiar with the series you will find many things reminiscent of past mario games, for example:
8 Worlds : SMB, SMB2, SMB3
Flag Ending: SMB
Riding Yoshi: SMBW
Maps for World: SMB3, SMBW
Item House: SMB3
Saving Princess Toadstool: SMB, SMB2, SMB3, SMBW
Pipes: SMB, SMBW
Half Way Save Point: SMBW
Koopas Castles: SMB3, SMBW
Items: Mushroom, Firepower, Star
All the characters are back from Bowser to Goomba's, Bullet Bills, Chain Chomps and more.
Game play is the same from earlier versions of Mario Bros series.
New things include:
Add or remove multiplayers while you are playing a game -- no need to quit because someone is tired of playing, add them back in when they want to play or when people come over.
Items:
Propeller mario -- shake wiimote to propeller into the sky.
Penguin Mario: Move more freely in water and on ice -- shoot ice balls. Belly slide on snow to kill enemy's.
Ice Mario: Freeze enemy's and use them as a block to jump on.
Star Coins: Use these to unlock hints for each level in Peach's castle.
Super Guide: Die 8 times in one level and watch how to beat it or let the computer beat it for you and move on.
Multiplayer Mode: New as you can lock yourself in a bubble if your friends can not get through a tough section -- and you unlock yourself out of the bubble when you want to play again.
If you die, you come back if you have remaining lives to help the team.
New Modes: Coin Battle -- battle in a level to get most coins.
Free for all -- play any course with your friends.
All in all this game is great if you are new to the Mario Francise, a casual gamer, fan of the original Mario series, multiplayer gaming, and want to have some old school fun. I recommend this game to everyone who owns a Wii. This is what Mario Should have been the first time around. Simply Amazing.

Super Mario Bros Wii

If you own a Nintendo, you probably know most everything there is to know about Mario. Although Nintendo tends to overplay the Mario card, creating some real stinkers, this is one to have. If you grew up playing all the old Mario titles, this one is for you. Back to the standard scrolling game with some new features you could never do before. The new game takes advantage of the wii remote to accomplish certain tasks. For example, a shake of the remote during a jump allows for a mid air spin which extends the length of your jump. Or certain platforms will tilt up or down depending on how you're holding the remote. There are new power ups to use in the worlds, notably the propeller suit, which with a shake of the remote allows you to temporarily fly through the air.
One very obvious difference with this game is multi-player mode, where up to four people can play the same level at the same time. A first for the side scrolling games. I have not personally used this function very much as my kids are too small, yet. But it should be fun once they get older.
Overall, a great title. Get it and enjoy.

Great Retro/Combination Mario Game

It provides great graphics, first hard to get use to, but once do that, is pretty awesome.
Levels are challenging. Characters may be the down side, however the fun will not run out.
Furthermore, the capacity of playing 4 player, ANYONE can play the game, either competitive or co-op style.
Really worth to buy it.

I bought this game as a venture into a new experience on the Wii with Mario and friends. So far, it has been fun and exciting.
You can play as Mario on single player or you can choose from up to three other players if there is a second player wanting to join up. To be able to choose from Luigi, Toad (yellow hat), or Toad (blue hat) gives me plenty of variety when playing this game. Two or more people can play on the same level at a time making the level more exciting then alone.
My only regret is that the game feels too short. The game is good but I wish it were longer. It can be beaten in the time span of two or three days (playing a good five hours).
However, the extra bonus of searching for Gold coins makes up for the length. Plus, you can rescue Toad as many times as you'd like within a world just by bumping into an enemy character that is on the map. There is even Yoshi in this game to be discovered!
Overall, I would buy this game if I want to experience the new Super Mario Bros.

Where was this game 15 years ago? Still could be better

Like- I always wanted a simultaneous co-op Mario side scrolling game. It combines mario 3 and world with walking around worlds and using collected items before stages (I did not find a flute yet :P). it has some new items which replaced others from previous Marios.
Dislike- you bump into each other, I think they should have made it so you go through each other (you have to watch out more for your team mates then the bad guys :P) or at least have the option to turn this on or off.
Gimme some screen! You can be killed if one moves on and the screen always follows whoever is in the lead so if your stuck behind and the screen leaves you DEAD!I think it should widen more.
WORST PART OF THE GAME: Whenever one grabs a mushroom/power up or gets hit and shrinks, the game does the freeze/transformation and this cancels out whatever move others are doing so if your trying to make a huge jump and your friend grabs a shroom or gets hit and shrinks it can make your jump not so high or even cancel the jump.
Also I think they should have used the 3rd and 4th player characters Daisy (the other princess) and real Toad.
Best advice the A button puts u in a bubble in multiplayer mode so if your about to die use it! (but be careful not to all use the bubble as that is instant lose)
This game is fun hands down and will bring laughs (for better or worse)
