Nike Forged Pro Combo Irons - Slightly Advanced Irons
Created: 05/07/09
These Nike irons are constructed very well as you would expect from a Nike product. These are a professional type of iron in that the heads are standard or tour pro size (not the larger oversized club head). The set is a progression of cavity back in the long irons, muscle back in the mid irons to blade in the short irons. If you are new to golf, I would not recommend these for the beginner.
I have been golfing now for a total of 5 months when I purchased my Pro Combo irons and had switched from a oversized, cavity back set to these Nike Pro Combo irons. I immediately noticed about a 1 to 1 1/2 club distance loss from my previous set of irons. I know it is not the clubs that are to blame for this, but my swing and address of the ball and the switch from oversized to pro sized irons that is to account for the loss in distance. These irons are also less forgiving than the typical cavity back irons (especially when you get into the muscle back and blade irons). You will have to practice the proper swing/stroke to keep an accurate and desired ball flight.
I am gradually adjusting to these irons and am improving my swing, address and distance with every use. I have used them three times now and had to have them lengthened due to my height (6'-2") after the second use. I have gained back about half of the distance I initially loss through adjustments in my swing and stroke and look forward to being able to accomplish better control and distance as I improve my game.
If you are a beginner or novice and not an ambitious and focused person, I would not recommend these irons for you. These irons require a stronger stroke, a good and controlled swing and a bit more experience before attempting to use them (I am extremely ambitious and like to challenge myself in every aspect of my life and that is why I switch to these so early in my game). I would instead recommend a more forgiving full cavity back iron with an oversized head, the reason being is that you will immediately become frustrated with the lack of distance and control you will achieve with these irons and will feel like quitting before you give the game a chance. Perhaps the Nike Slingshot OSS would be a better fit for a beginning golfer. Get a club that will let you enjoy the game at your level.

Great feel, value and quality

I was hitting balls at the range a few weeks ago and Mike, our club pro, stopped by to hit a few himself. I was hitting my r7 7 iron, he was hitting his NIKE forged 8 iron. After a few minutes of admiring and commenting on each others ball striking (he was just being nice)we swapped clubs. I never thought I was a candidate for a pure blade. The first thing I noticed was how nicely the smallish, no offset head set up behind the ball. The next thing I noticed, when I made contact, was the pure buttery feel of these 1030 carbon steel forgings. I was pleasantly surprised at how consistent the ball flight was shot after shot. I hit the 6 iron and again, the feel, accuracy and ball flight was much better than expected. Mike suggested, after noticing the grin on my face, that I should look into the pro combo forged. Out of curiousity I started looking on e-bay and was amazed at the price level these irons were selling. I figured at these prices it was worth the risk and I finally found a seller and set that I could trust and sucessfully won the auction at under 150.00. Keep in mind that these irons are sitting in shops at over 800.00. When the clubs arrived at my home they were in better condition than expected and being a custom clubmaker for almost twenty years I was able to check lofts and lies and to my amazement they were not only within +- 1* (industry standard) but they were right on factory specs. Believe me this is not typical of used irons regardless of brand name. To me this speaks volumes as to NIKE's quality materials and quality control. I have played several rounds with this set, and all I can say is, I play to about a 6 handicap and if you are anywhere near this number and you don't give these clubs a serious look, you are missing out on alot of FUN !!!

I've owned iron sets in the past that range from no name to RAM to Tommy Armors. I've been playing since 1997, but didn't really put in the time and homework to make a difference until 2003. I've always enjoyed the game when I would hit in the 100's, 90's, and now low 80's. Since I got these clubs, I've been able to add back spin to my short irons, loft to my mid irons, and distance to my long irons. These clubs truly are a combination of the best of all worlds. My RAM set were over sized irons that were very forgiving, but they didn't allow me to shape the ball. These clubs invite you to get creative and execute your shots. My set have stiff Speeder Shafts, which blow away graphite and True Temper steel shafts away. In the past I've had graphite shafts and they have snapped on me. These stiff shafts have added accuracy to my game, which has simply helped my confidence in my ball striking. The one thing you have to keep in mind when considering these irons or any other irons, is that if you are not willing to put in the practice, then no irons out there will help your game. In my opinion, The Nike Pro Combo Irons are the only iron set to ever consider.

These irons are GREAT! Tony the Tiger should be the spokesman for these clubs! Played my first round with them today with minimal practice and almost everyshot was right on target! I gained 10-15 yards on all my clubs, hit my 4 about 220 first time dead straight. I've never hit a 4 that well ever! All my irons have Rifle 6.0 shafts and Winn grips, I've heard the stock Speed Step shafts(i think thats what they're called) are garbage but I don't know personally. All I know is that these clubs are great and the combo idea was a great idea. I have so much confidence in these I don't think i'm gonna bring my driver next time I go and I may finally break 80! So if you are playing some crappy cavity back oversized irons and you are looking to up your game I fully recommend these clubs! NIKE pleases start making these again!

To use these clubs, you have to be a low andicapper. I have a 5 handicap. solid clubs.
I'm just getting used to the 3,4, and 5 irons. They are harder to get used to since they seem like a small club head. 6-pw are sweet. Last set i had is the Nike Pro-Combos and that set made my handicap from 12 to a 5.
All in all, sweet set of irons
