This camera is a great camera for those looking to try out DSLR cameras. It is not considered a "Professional" camera by any means, however, it is a great camera to have for a first timer or beginner in the photography field. Make sure you pay attention to the lenses you choose to shoot with this camera as the type of glass (lens) you choose to use can make or break your photos. As with any camera, assuming you're NOT a professional (or you'd of gotten something better), you need to understand how to use this camera outside of the AUTO features. If you want to shoot in AUTO, buy a point and shoot style camera. You really need to take the time to learn the manual settings to get the most from this camera.

The D3100 is an exceptional value. Picture quality for a semi-pro camera is sharp and consistent. All controls are intuitive and well placed. Just wish it had variable position LCD screen. Works well in low light situations. Purchased the D3100 to replace D40. Really wanted D7000 but dd not want to spend that much. The D3100 is almost as good for much less money.

Having a D3

Created: 06/01/11
Having a D3, I believe that the performance of this little dynamo is amazing. It has the price of a middle range "point and shoot," with the capacity and options of a mid range SLR. This is the camera that is always at my side, and thus far, it has exceeded all expectations. The color is rich, images are crisp. Of course, it does not have the ISO sensitivity, and the low light capacity of the D3, but otherwise, it is an amazing value in all areas, price, ease of use, and the perennial build quality of Nikon cameras. Actually, to emphasize the ease of use, I was able to operate without a hitch on our first trip despite not having the manual with me. Men don't read instructions or manuals anyway...

for starting out, its a great camera. its the best on the market at its price range. and it looks good taking pictures or recording video. buy a warranty and put the strap on. EVERYONE thinks they wont drop it, but we always drop our phones. get an external mic if youre doing video. congrats if you bought one, make money and upgrade as you learn.
