The Nintendo 64 was everybody's favorite childhood system; it certainly was mine. With an excellent library of games, the N64 revolutionized 3D gaming.
Of course, it is without its flaws.

The Nintendo 64 console itself is very durable as I had mine for over 13 years, and it still works great! The problem I have with the console is the controllers. The controllers are faulty; I mean ALL N64 brand controllers have at least two faults to them.

Let's start with the original N64 controller that comes with the system. The original has two flaws; the analog stick or joystick and the d-pad. The joystick becomes loose after a month of using it. Sometimes it becomes so loose that it is no longer usable. The d-pad becomes stiff after a period of time (3 months). It gets to the point where you have to press extra hard for it to work (Like the NES controller after extensive use).

Next are the Superpads or Superpad 64, whichever you prefer to call it. There are two versions of this controller: the black-long-joystick-to-the-left controllers and the colored bulky controllers that resembles the N64 controller, but, really, it looks like crap.

Let's start with the black Superpad controllers. These get heavy praise on YouTube because the joystick does not get loose and it stays solid no matter what. There are three flaws to this controller. First, the cord that connects to the controller easily loosens, which makes the controller unresponsive after awhile. Secondly, the Z button no longer works or becomes stiff after one month of use. Seriously, the Z button? Third or lastly, the joystick ruins faster than the original N64 controller because it rotates your character by itself when playing any game. It's like your character is spinning in circles and you have not laid a hand on the joystick yet. How can this be? Once it starts doing this, it's broken. It usually occurs one to three months depending how much you use it.

The other Superpad, the one that comes in 8 different colors: red, green, black, grey, gold, blue, clear, or yellow. This controller is bulky and heavy. They sell a lot of these on ebay and amazon and is cheaper to buy than the other superpad controller. The problem with this controller is the same with the other superpad controller: loose cord, stiff Z button, and metal joystick that spins your character around in circles without even touching it. I know your thinking, 'couldn't you just unplug the controller and plug it back in for the spinning to stop?' No, once it starts doing that, it won't stop; plus this controller gets greasy so easily.

Then there are the other third party controllers that have a combination of problems. But the one problem that occurs often with these controllers is the joystick. Unless you have a Hori Pad Mini or an arcade pad, you will always have problems with the joystick of any N64 controller.

Overall, the N64 has flawed controllers that make game play annoying. Yes, the N64 has many classic games, but what good are they if you can't play them properly or play them at all. You'll spend more time and money looking for controller replacements than actually playing the game system itself. I know I did, with the 13 plus years as a Nintendo 64 user, I went through over 50 controllers, all types and brands. None have matched the quality of my one and only Dualshock 1 controller, and that came out in the same era as the N64. Bottom line, it just isn't worth the stretch.

It's hard to forget the glory gaming days the Nintendo 64 console brought us when it first hit the shelves over 15 years ago. The N64 was the top tier of hardware and the games that were released were considered the deepest and most entertaining library of software ever developed for a gaming platform.

All that being said, a lot has changed since 1995 and the N64 does not translate so well when used along side of todays technology. When the N64 first arrived even though the graphics were groundbreaking they were famous for a "blurry" look even on standard definition TVs of the day and that problem is magnified by our HDTVs we use today, lets break down the biggest problems first.

With any HDTV, you will need to scrap the RF or AV cables and upgrade to an s-video cord as the visual quality of either RF or AV renders playing anything like 007 or Perfect Dark close to impossible to play as you can not make out targets in the distance and the texture is enough to make you want to vomit.

Experimenting with your HDTV settings between aspect ratio will improve some games but not others, it becomes a real chore to change and reset settings like this every time you want to play another cart.

You absolutely must have the Nintendo memory expansion in the N64 as it increases the maximum resolution the console can display, trying to play anything without it on an HDTV is not going to work.

Those are all issues, some can be overlooked, others can not, so you may ask, well, what can I do to enjoy my N64 then? There is no simple answer, the best solution is to play your N64 console on a standard definition TV around 19 or 20" using AV or S-Video, this will bring graphics to a level you will find playable but you must also remember the hardware is over 15 years old and is never going to look the way you remember it looking.

In conclusion, I would recommend either purchasing N64 games through a Wii system and playing them that way since it is HDTV friendly and will look worlds better than straight from a N64. A last option would be to play N64 games through an emulator on your PC such as Project 64 and send the signal to your HDTV through a VGA connection, will look great for what it is.

If you are a hard core gamer, your going to want the original hardware and cartridges but if your a novice in search of some nostalgia and fun from old N64 games, purchase them from the Wii store or get an emulator and save yourself some headaches.

Low Price, Amazing # of titles available = great fun, Nintendo 64 Console that can have four Controllers.
A classic system that will provide great fun for all ages. Great games available to provide endless multi player entertainment.

As soon as this came out many people got it and bought the first game that came out for it that is also a hit game, super mario 64. To this day people talk about this system more than any other old nintindo. This is the first nintindo that many series came out on like super smash bros and it is the first system that they used computers to make nintindo games. U can tell it is because just look at the graphics difference from the snes to this one which just stoped being made a couple of years before the n64 came out. This was one of my favorite nintindos that have ever came out.
We've owned a N64 for years and find that no matter who comes over to visit, or what the age group of the visitors, there is always a game that is vastly fun to play. There are single-player games, party games, competition games, cooperative games, thinking games, shooting games, and everything in between.
For a household looking for a fun way to spend time together or to relax and have fun, the N64 is definitely worth looking into. It holds up well compared to the other consoles on the market, and offers something for everyone.
In conclusion, N64 is the best system for games, fun, and multi player because of it's four controller ports. I suppose that's why they call it "The Fun Machine".
And for a console & 4 controllers, you can't go wrong!

I've had three N64 in my lifetime and each time I get HOURS of use out of the console. It was a huge leap forward for game-play and graphics (I still like the graphics to this day). The only things really flawed about the system is that 1) it's old enough that you need to unplug it after each use [that's how I lost one, lighting struck the house and fried the system] and 2) the controllers are sensitive and can easily be broken if tossed or neglected.
Over all with the selection of games I can keep busy for hours and there are plenty of choices of game styles (eg. Racing games, FPS, Action, VS Fighters, RPG, and more :)
This system is a great buy for someone who wants to relive childhood memories of games, or share them with the new generation. As long as you're willing to keep it clean and keep it unplugged when not in use, it could last YEARS.
Hope this helped if you were debating to get the system or not :) Happy gaming everyone :)

The Nintendo 64 is timeless and provides fun for all ages. I've had a Nintendo 64 since I was a child, and even as I grew up through my teen years and into adulthood, the Nintendo 64 still provides all sorts of entertainment. Its simplicity is refreshing after playing newer consoles, and its stamina is unparalleled by other consoles, the thing just keeps on working. If it's rainy outside and your tired of playing board games with your siblings, this really is a perfect alternative. Many of the games like Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., and Mario Party provide multiplayer action that is both challenging, and fun, and takes practically no time to set up or clean up. To sum things up, having a Nintendo 64 has been a great experience, and even with modern consoles improving their graphics and gameplay, they simply cannot match the level of entertainment produced when you pick up a 3 pronged control and dive into some 64-bit entertainment.
