Phenomenon (VHS, 1997)

John Travolta plays George Maley, a small town mechanic with ordinary skills who thinks that he has seen a bright light in the night sky. It was his birthday, and out of nowhere, this bright light flattens him. Thinking that he saw a UFO, everything now seems to come easy to him. He has scientific ideas that are just astounding, and all of a sudden has this thirst for knowledge that leads him to read five or six books a day!
A local woman who has had a rough life and really doesn't want anyone else in her life comes to town. She is one of those wierdo types who makes chairs out of native drift wood or other types of stuff. George falls madly in love with her and just can't seem to live without her. George has a friend Forrest Tucker, who is in love with a black singer, but otherwise is too afraid of women to talk to one. He is George's only real friend and they spend a lot of time together. As time goes by, George gets more and more wierd and people start to become afraid of him because he is now like the smartest person around.
When an immigrant kid gets lost and is sick and presumed dying, George learns the entire Portuguese language in about thirty minutes, and is able to converse with a sick man and find the kid.
As it turns out, George hasn't seen any bright light. He is suffering from the effects of a massive brain tumor that has, while increasing his brain function by triple, is also killing him. This was a pretty good movie. I just wish I liked John Travolta.
