Be The Ultimate Psychonaut!
Created: 12/09/06
Psychonauts is an odd game - odd in an utterly quirky and bizarre way! You play as Raz, and you have snuck into a psychic summer camp in the hopes of training to be the ultimate Psychonaut. The story follows the tasks you have to perform and the crazy bunch of characters you meet along the way.
There are a few games out there that get the PS2 to push out some fabulous graphics. Unfortunately Psychonauts isn't one of them. The graphics are good but could have been better to complement the oddball theme. That being said, the environments that Raz interacts with are very colorful and vibrant.
As the gameplay goes, Psychonauts uses a lot of the elements common in 3D platformers these day, so it won't take you long to learn how to swing from bars, perform double-jumps, and grind those rails. While controlling Raz isn't particularly difficult, I found the menu system slightly unintuitive, and equip items becomes a little annoying. Raz starts off with only a few powers and as you progress through the various mental worlds, you can develop new ones. You can, however, equip only three psychic powers at one time. This can be a little bothersome. There is some replayability once you have completed the game, as you can go back to collect the items that you missed. You will gain a secret bonus for your efforts.
The sound in this game is good. I found that the music and the dialogue fitted in quite nicely with the moods and themes throughout the game's environments.
Overall, I would give this game 4 out of 5. The concept and story are very original but it is let down by the graphics which I believe is the game's biggest weakness. Despite this, the good storyline, manageable controls, and quirky humor help to make Psychonauts a very enjoyable platformer.

This is an excellent, fresh and intertaining game from the wacky mind of Tim Shafer. It is very hard not to get hooked once you start playing and you owe it to yourself to buy this game. I've spent more money renting then I would have buying. The gameplay is simple, new and in-depth with so many interesting characters. You play as Raz, who is sent to a camp and decides to become a psychonaut before his parents return for him. With 13 levels including side missions created from incredible, colorful graphics, it with keep you coming back for more!

A Whole New Reality!

This game is like a world unto itself. Very imaginative, the levels are amazing. Wonderful story-telling combined with excellent graphics. Each level takes you inside the mind of another person (or fish - one of my favorite levels!), some sane but most far from sane and all insanely creative, as Raz tries to unravel the secret plot as well as become a full-fledged psychonaut. There are several abilities Raz must learn to acheive his goal and recover the stolen brains of his fellow campers!

Psychonauts is something of a rarity in video gaming culture. It has a very unique concept that is executed well and in a non-repetitive fashion. Also, it's funny, and not in a "wow that was a terrible joke" or "ugh, I can't believe they just said that" kind of way.
Everything about this game screams detail and followthrough from the writing (some minor characters have an immense back story) to the gameplay *except some minor control issues that honestly didn't effect my experience too much i.e. no broken controllers*
It's a gem that if you haven't played, then you should absolutely find a way of picking this up and giving it a go.
Who knew video games could be funny, well thought-out and non-repetitive?

Psychonauts: very original and only slightly buggy
Created: 12/09/07
Psychonauts is a very creative game in terms of its concept. Your play as Raz, a gifted young psychic who had escaped from the circus to become a psychonaut. Raz has to invade other characters psyches to unravel the mystery surrounding the psychonaut's camp.
pros:
Phychnauts allows the player to visit a variety of unique worlds, these words represents different character's inner psyches. The worlds are very creatively done, my favorite is the twisted "milkman conspiracy' level. The graphics are inventive and the voice work in the game is excellent. Each of the voices matches the character it belongs to perfectly. The dialog is also very witty. The platforming action, while not very original still is fun and engaging.
cons:
The game suffers from bugs which can make you permanently stuck forcing you to load your last save point. One of these bugs is in the lake area. When Raz gets to control a boat the boat can get stuck on the near-by wooden walkway, a clipping bug. Another bug is in the object levitation training area. If you shoot the 1st object you are forced to levitate it will become un-movable. This will get you stuck permanently, again. The game has few other glitches too. It is amazing that glitches this big made it into the final product even though the game spend many years in development.
