Abby (Brittany Murphy) follows her boyfriend to Japan, but he immediately dumps her. Abby hasn't any friends in Japan and doesn't speak Japanese. She stumbles into a ramen restaurant, becomes fascinated by the process of making ramen, and begs the owner to teach her. He doesn't speak English, and he thinks Abby might be insane. But he agrees to teach her, mainly to get cheap labor to clean up. He is never satisfied with Abby's efforts and dumps out her ramen without tasting it. To enjoy this film, you must be adept at reading subtitles, since much of the humor derives from conversations in which Abby and the Japanese man can't understand each other. It is also funny because the ramen-making process and the relationship between Abby and her teacher is played as if this were THE KARATE KID. As the audience gradually gets inside the hearts and minds of Abby and her teacher, THE RAMEN GIRL becomes a poignant story of loss, friendship, and self-discovery. Viewers who start out laughing at Abby will start crying for her, then cheering her on. The happy ending is improbable, but Brittany Murphy's appealing performance makes you believe.

) A surprisingly good movie. Great characters and a plot that gives insight into Japanese life and what it takes to turn around your life instead of merely succumbing to despair or indulgence. Brittany Murphy gives a great performance and there is much to be learned about life from this movie. And, it is funny and moving at the same time.

Very cute, funny movie! First movie Brittany Murphy actually directed aswell as starred in. Takes place in Japan, but it is very humorous. Brittany Murphy carried this movie and I found it to be a good flick!
