Movie synopsis

Peter and Bobby Farrelly have always expressed an especially warm but unsentimental attitude in their films toward those with disabilities, most notably in THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY and SHALLOW HAL. THE RINGER, which they produced (but neither wrote nor directed), takes this trait to feverish new heights. JACKASS-c**-leading man stars Johnny Knoxville as office schmo Steve Barker, whose request for more responsibility at his job indirectly results in the severing of four fingers from the hand of Stavi, the mild-mannered office janitor. When Steve requests financial help from his morally-questionable gambling addict Uncle Gary (Brian Cox), Stevie finds himself posing as "Jeffy" an athlete in the Special Olympics whose victory against track champion Jimmy (Leonard Flowers) could spell an end to Uncle Gary's debts and the reattaching of Stavi's fingers. Though a basic description of its premise would make most viewers cry foul, THE RINGER skirts the obvious charge of exploitation by making the mentally challenged characters the only ones to realize that Steve is only acting handicapped. Steve's fellow Olympians are cast with a combination of veteran character actors and real-life former Special Olympians (most notably Edward Barbanell, John Taylor, and Leonard Flowers) who, while lending the film authenticity, also spark with comic timing and the true joy of being on camera. Knoxville once again makes an affable hero, and Ricky Blitt's screenplay, while crass by nature, keeps true vulgarity at bay in favor of a good nature that makes simplicity an asset.

"[T]here is a sweet and rather sentimental story arc."

ALMOST family friendly.

The movie was a lot better than I anticipated, consider the caliber of the movie's "star", Johnny Knoxville. A good basic escapist fun film complete with silly plot and over-the-top characters. Peering into the Special Olympics in any way other than a documentary presents quite a challenge, but as loony as the movie was, it did a tremendous job of humanizing those with assorted disabilities.

It was highly entertaining to watch the actors who either were "challenged" or were simply portraying it. I felt that some of the portrayers were poor choices and they would have been better off finding another actor, particularly from the former group.

Enjoyed watching it as a family with my young teens. The movie was scoring high until they felt it necessary, as have so many other PG-13 movies of late, to include a blatant F-bomb. Thanks SO very much. Yeah, it was a hilarious line. A shame there were no writers skilled enough to make it hilarious AND clean.

Families favorite line from the movie, hands down: "I have a dog named Candy, and sometimes, she doesn't bite, but also sometimes, she does. Chomp!"

nothing like jonny knoxvilles "jackass" movie, this is actualy politicly correct!!
a movie about a guy who was too nice to fire a janitor who loved his job and so he hired the guy to mow his lawn but the guy wasnt too smart when he put his hand in the lawn mower blades and lost 3fingers. again the main character is too nice to leave the guy with no fingers and the hospital wont repair it without 28K up front so he riggs the special olympics with the assistance/encouragment of his crooked uncle.
watch the movie if you liked stupid humor, i think it also draws a little light on how "special" people are still people too and can make good friends too and arnt so bad. they are people who have "less" but are still happy and dont care, rhey can surprise you with their capabilities.

Hilarious

Jeffie (Stevie) tried to fix the special olympics, when he realizes that the people there aren't just slow retards, they are skilled and they do know what they're doing.

This movie was one of the funniest I've ever seen, I watched it and couldn't stop laughing everything was funny, and it made a point that you shouldn't make fun of or underestimate people that are a bit slow in the mind, it's not their fault and they can still do some of the stuff that an average human can do.

I thought that the great acting and the perfectness of all of the characters makes this one of my favorite movies.

I would suggest buying this movie.

good because it was appropriate for the movie

This was a refreshing positive approach to people with intellectual disabilities. I really enjoyed this movie and how the characters were chosen from people with actual intellectual disabilities and not actors that just need to play the part.
The story line is good but the acting was better!
Our whole family enjoyed this movie!

BEST Movie Ever................ I laughed, I cried, a step away from his Jackass stuff... real movie feel. Also found out that the Special Olympics actually worked with them, they didn't make fun of anyone, Good Stuff.
