Great plot, great theme, but not for everybody!

The Rules of Attraction is one of my favorite movies, so I may be biased, but I will attempt to review the movie fairly! First off, the movie is not appropriate nor intended for everybody. There is an overwhelming amount of sex, drug use, profanity....you get the idea. However, this approach does a wonderful job of conveying the satirical and pessimistic view of college life. Many other reviewers complained about the introduction to the movie, but I feel that after the first five minutes the viewer already has a decently good idea of who the main characters are and what parts they will play in the movie.
Roger Avary does an excellent job of taking a very complex story and making all of the pieces fit in the end. I will admit, though, that you will have questions after the first time you watch it. It took me several viewings to understand all the intricacies of the movie.
One of the reasons this movie is important is because it touches on many taboos in American society. As a college student, I have experienced and witnessed many aspects of this movie. I will grant that parts are exaggerated, but lets not forget this movie is meant to be shocking and appalling. However, the extent of the partying, drug use, and other parts of the movie are accurate in some settings! (It's kind of scary to think about that after seeing the movie, though!)
The bottom line is that if you like movies that have you thinking and questioning things days after you watch them, you will probably like this movie. If you like slapstick comedy or movies that don't require much thought, this is probably not the movie for you.

I bought this movie on Ebay after a friend told me that the main character, Sean, was Patrick Bateman's (of American Psycho fame), little brother. I got the movie halfway expecting a slasher movie, but it turned out to be very funny but with a darker sense of humor than you'd expect from a fairly well known cast. Another Ellis book to movie gone good!!

Decent movie. James Van Der Beek stinks and puts in a walktrough performance. Ian Somberhalder is alot better and can't beleive his career hasn't been better.

A chilling view into human sexuality

The first time I saw this movie I just though it was about college relationships but then I read the book. This opened up a whole new world on how our instincts control us. I recommend this to anyone who likes a movie that makes you think.
