Saint's Row overall is an OK game. It is similar to Grand Theft Auto in the sense that you are placed in a city at the start of the game and work your way up by doing odd jobs for people. You can run around the city and wreck havoc, do a number of side missions, focus on the main storyline, or play "whored mode," in which you fight off waves of peculiar enemies using certain weapons.
I'll start with the main storyline. You start off in a brand new city, and the main goal is to bring the Saints' gang back up to it's former glory. A recurring theme is that the saints have turned into corporate "whores" and they're trying to change that, but it only shows up in the beginning. The story itself really is not that great. Some missions feel like they were just there to move the plot along, while others make no sense at all. One good thing about them is that they are not at all repetitive. If I recall correctly, every mission was a completely different experience, but with one general goal, which was to kill as many enemies as possible. Also, the story is way too short for a game with no multiplayer. It's no more than 7 hours long. Overall, the main story is not that great.
Next there is the free roaming and side missions, a prominent part of the game. While free roaming you can get the police or other gangs to chase you and fight you, however they are very easy to fend off andeasy to get rid of, so there isn't much to do. The side missions are the same exact 6 or 7 missions copied in different areas of the city. A couple of them are, however, actually fun and worth playing, the problem is that all the side missions take less than 3 hours to complete.
Last, there is the "whored" mode. It consists of gunning down hordes of abnormal enemies with certain selections of weapons. All I have to say is that its just not very fun. I tried playing it for a couple hours, to see the brighter side of it, but I just found myself really bored.
Other things I should mention:
There is online Co op play, with your choice of whored mode or campaign.
You don't have to play the first 2 saints row games to understand the story of this one.
There is an upgrade system, which you buy upgrades for yourself, your gang, your car, and your house. You upgrade so fast that in a few hours you could have yourself at invincible to any harm and unlimited ammo without reloading.
There are cheats for this game, I just didn't really bother.
The Verdict:
First let me note that the first couple hours of the game are really fun.
While saints row has some interesting missions and fun side missions, its just way too short. Whored mode just is not very fun and free roam has no challenge.
Overall, its really not worth buying as I guarantee that you will lose interest within a week, maybe 2. Still, it is worth at least renting

Saints Row: The Third is ridiculous and outlandish, ending up as an entertainingly silly sequel for adult gamers. There are so many customization options, non-repetitive missions, memorable characters, and other extras packed onto the disc that it's plainly evident a lot of work went into the game's making. The money and respect players earn can be used to buy and unlock new goodies for your character (outfits, weapons, vehicles), so there's incentive to take on as many missions as possible, going on violent adventures that see them taking out rivals, protecting a convoy in a vehicle, and stealing evidence from a police station. It's worth adding the single-player game can be played in co-op mode with an online friend.

If you loved SR2, you'll probably just barely like SR3

Compared to Saints Row 2, this was a disappointment. I prefer games that allow more flexibility in how to do some missions, GTA San Andreas is a good example of that. In SR3, nearly every mission just tosses you into the middle of a fight and you have to figure out how to survive, but the options are limited. The story was pretty weak as well, it seems like they just threw in weird things and sci-fi nonsense rather than putting any effort into making the story interesting. I'll play it again eventually, but it won't be anytime soon. At a little over $40 for the version that includes all the online extras, it still seemed overpriced for this game. Wait until it's really cheap, it may be worth the money then.

it's a great game but not as challenging as the first to games in the series.
this game is perfect if you like playing a game just to destroy things and have a good time doing it... i mean come on you can play as a toilet with an rpg. the co-op is also a very fun part of the game but beware if you buy the game used you will have to pay $10 for an online pass...
great game. very little bugs.
not for kids
