) I replaced the stock Dell 500 GB 7400 RPM HDD in my Studio XPS 1640 with this HDD due to needing more storage space. I was willing and ready to deal with a slower seek and search rate due to the decrease in RPM of the unit as compared to the stock unit.
To my surprise the speed of the computer has not suffered at all noticeably in everyday use. it may show up on some bench test or very heavy HDD use but I do not perceive any slowing at all.
As a bonus to doubling the storage for a very reasonable cost I think the battery consumption hsa gone down as well due to the decreased HDD RPM.

i would recommend this product..it seemed to run much faster than what it replaced..however i was unable to test it much further than about a week..the video card in that computer went not long after replacing the hdd.i bought it for a couple of reasons..price..size..and the fact that samsung as a reputable name in the industry for quality and usability..i think the price was a big factor too in deciding to purchase this particular hdd..pricing, size of hdd , and overall quality were good

Buy if you require more storage and don't mind sacrificing a bit of speed

) Bought for my 2010 15inch Macbook Pro which was easy to install.
Great to have the extra storage capacity, but the performance speed has diminished slightly as it's only 8mb cache and 5400rpm. My previous harddrive was a toshiba 500gb 16mb cache and 7200rpm. Hard to notice the difference in performance but it's there.
Have now partitioned the Samsung HDD to run windows 7 as well for my CAD work. This will probably give a true indicator on the performance speed but am still yet to install Solidworks. Adobe CS5 has been more or less the same - probably runs a little bit slower than before but it may just be psychological.
Samsung Spinpoint was installed about a month ago and still running strong.
Good buy! Highly recommended if you're after the storage and willing to sacrifice a bit of speed performance.

More than I expected

I am using the Samsung Spinpoint M8 HDD for a month. I think it is perfect. It is fast, without any noise.
Excellant Hard Drive at a Great Price!

excellant hard drive. I brought the Samsung Spinpoint to replace my PS3 hard drive. It works perfectly from the very beginning, have not had any problems with it. It is also very quiet, no noise at all while the game console is operating.
