A must for inside/night sports
Created: 05/11/10
I bought this lens to go with my Canon 7D and Canon EOS XSI. I had to buy it after a friend and I shot at the same event but with different lens. The difference was amazing. My son plays high school football. The games are after dark and most of the fields have bad lighting. I get great photos in bad lighting with this lens. The 2.8 through the entire zoom range is well worth the extra dollars. Images are bright, crisp, and clear within the lens zone. I sit about mid field 10 -15 yards off the field and get perfect images to about the 10 yard line. After that the images are clear but soft(not so sharp) into the endzone. Beyond that from my spot it is too dark. Shooting inside sports I can really stop action with this lens. My kit lens, canon 55-250 and quantary 70-300 just are not fast enough to get good sharp clear pics when I zoom in. I would recomend this lens highly for this type of shooting.
I have not really used this lens durring nice bright sunny days, that is what the kit lens are for. I bought it specificaly for night football and inside sports WITHOUT having to use a flash.
Now for the bad. It is heavy. It balances well on a monopod on the lenses collar. Out past a certain point the focus gets soft, might only be due to lack of light for me. And again its heavy.
Bottom line. Buy this lens for low light shooting where zooming in and out matters. The constant 2.8 f stop is a must. I did not find the need for the OS (optical stabilazation)lens. I can't say enough good about this lens.

I was in search of a 70-200mm lens f/2.8 specifically for taking photos at Gymnastic meets where flash photography is not allowed. Because I am usually in the stands I needed zoom. This is my first DSLR and I chose the Sigma becasuse I used both lenses prior and found equal results. A used Sigma II was much more economical than the Nikkor version. The meet season begins next so I will be able to provide better feedback then.

I love the lens it's focus is nearly immaculate! It is going on our Nikon D90 and it is so awesome that the pictures are turning out as if you were seeing them in 20/20. My husband says that it is a great alternative to the Nikkor lens' and that it's almost unnoticable the difference.

Great lens; fast and quiet focus with a rich, creamy bokeh when fully opened. Highly recommend as a budget alternative to the Canon 70-200 2.8 L.
Now, off to shoot some more!

I use it on the Nikon D3100 and i love the 70-200 sigma. A littleish soft around 200 but excellent otherwise. Use for sports and indoor concerts.
