Product Information
The rapid transition to HD programming in broadcasting and postproduction has introduced a tremendous demand for an entry-level path into the HD world. Sony's response to this demand is the HVR-Z1U Digital HD Video Camera Recorder - a compact and cost-effective HD camcorder that builds on the market-acclaimed DVCAM recorders. The HVR-Z1U camcorder adopts the all-new, 1/4-inch HD format - the HDV 1080i specification of the HDV format. Combined with three high-resolution 1/3-inch type mega pixel CCDs, the HVR-Z1U captures and plays back 1080i HD signals, while maintaining the DVCAM/DV recording and playback capabilities provided on current Sony DVCAM models. What's more, the HVR-Z1U offers a down-conversion capability of its 1080i recordings. These features allow the HVR-Z1U to be active immediately in current SD systems, while also providing a step-by-step migration to the HD world - operators can continue to acquire in DVCAM or DV, and switch to the HDV as needed, or acquire in HDV 1080i from the start and use the down-conversion capability as required. In addition to a unique camcorder body design and with its multitude of camera features, the HVR-Z1U offers maximum operability in the field, as well as opening up a new range of opportunities for creative shooting. Combining these features with the HD picture quality that HDV format provides, the HVR-Z1U becomes an exciting acquisition tool for a variety of applications today and tomorrow - from video journalism, wedding and event videography, corporate and training productions, and digital movie-making, up to broadcast newsgathering.Offered at a price tag comparable to Sony DVCAM camcorders, the HVR-Z1U paves the way into cost-effective but uncompromised HD program production.

Sony HVR-Z1U is a GREAT Camera

Created: 09/10/06
This was a MAJOR investment, involving ALL members of our production company (Not Me Productions). I decided to purchase the Sony HVR-Z1U camera based on it’s use in the TV arena, recommendation by a MAJOR studio representative and the NUMEROUS positive reviews it has received to date. Also, the deal offered by '4rrest' was GREAT! A fair price with extras thrown in.

This camera has performed superbly! It is EVERYTHING the critics said and more! We have used it on one documentary shoot and one TV Sitcom shoot (with a 2nd rented Sony HVR-Z1U) with excellent results. As suggested by Sony (and others) we shot everything in 1080i using the new Sony PHDVN-63DM Digital Master tapes and edited with Sony Vegas (7) in HD. The training video that was included with the camera helped all the camera operators (3) get ‘Up to Speed’ quickly, avoiding costly mistakes and taking advantage of the cameras' new features. The only issue we’ve encountered so far involves transferring the ‘Universal’ timecode from the camera into Vegas but that’s not any fault with the camera (we ‘Synced’ both cameras to make editing easier –it worked on the cameras, but not in Vegas, so far).

Virtually EVERYTHING can be MANUALLY controlled (to an 'old time' photographer, that's the ONLY way to go). But, if you wnat FULL auto, you can do that as well. The 'Gain' control and presets allow this camera to work in VERY low light with little 'Gain Noise', a real surprise.

In short, just can't say enough about this camera.

Thanks again to '4rrest' for providing accurate information and FAST service.

Packs a lot of punch!

Created: 05/07/06
I've been using the HVR-Z1U for several weeks now and feel very satisfied with it. I have begun to discover how I best like to use the camera and the camera, in turn, can be programmed to accomodate this with personalized menus, scene files, and optional components. It produces great images with relative ease and the transition from DV to HDV is friendlier than one might expect. The ONE item I'm still addressing is the lack of covers for the XLR inputs... however this can be remedied and for its size and price the Z1U is a great value.

Awesome HDV Camera

Created: 29/09/06
I've been using this camera for about 6 months and after shooting several projects with it, have found this camera to be the absolute BEST HDV camera on the market.
There is no other camera that can give you the quality of HDV video and the look of film as tha Z1U. I've "test driven" all of the HDV cameras available today and none hold a candle to the Z1U.
