Movie synopsis

Based on the classic Marvel Comics series, Sam Raimi's SPIDER-MAN deftly details the origin of the web-slinging superhero. When awkward New York City teenager Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) attends a class field trip to a laboratory, he gets bitten by a genetically altered spider while taking photos of his longtime crush, the lovely Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). Soon he discovers this bite has given him remarkable powers--heightened strength, dexterity, and awareness, along with the ability to cling to walls and shoot webs from his wrists. Hoping to win Mary Jane's heart using his new talents, Peter becomes distracted from home life with his doting Aunt May (Rosemary Harris) and Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson), ultimately leading to tragedy--and his new role as the crime-fighting Spider-Man. Meanwhile Harry Osborn (Willem Dafoe), the industrialist father of Peter's friend Norman (James Franco), undergoes a transformation of his own, bringing about the creation of Spider-Man's arch-nemesis: The Green Goblin. In order to save his loved ones--and all of New York City--from the devastating force of the deluded Goblin, Spider-Man must take on the villain in a series of stunning battles.By staying true to the essence of the comic book, Raimi accomplishes the rare feat of crafting a superhero movie with a real heart. Rather than focusing solely on action and explosions, SPIDER-MAN wisely shines the spotlight on the character of Peter Parker, played with perfect bewilderment by Maguire. The special effects, of course, are dazzling, but they are topped by an excellent cast that also includes the radiant Dunst, the menacing Dafoe, the brooding Franco, and the scene-stealing J.K. Simmons as Peter's tough-talking boss. (Raimi fans will notice cameos by the director's brother, Ted Raimi, and EVIL DEAD series star Bruce Campbell.) The result is a charming and amazingly entertaining film unafraid to combine CGI animation with sincere human emotion.

Spiderman 1

Most "first" superhero films suffer from having to explain the background and origin of the character, oftimes to the consternation of fans who are encyclopedic in their knowledge before the movie starts. A good film has to maintain the balance of explaining who the characters are to the uninitiated, while catering to the "let's get to the action" impulse of the uberfan. It's a balance that few comic films have achieved successfully.
SPIDERMAN pulls it off very well.
The story is true to the mythos while making some updates and adjustments that add flavor and excitement. The characters are well-drawn and believable - even J. Jonah Jameson, editor of the Daily Bugle. The first sequences where Peter Parker is learning to use his new abilities in the real world ring true - he makes mistakes; he doesn't get it right every time; he screws up. And when he does, he pays the consequences.
As mentioned before, the actors deliver good, solid performances. They all seem aware that, while it ain't really real, they are charged with bringing realism to their roles. Fanboys may quibble (we always do) but it's all top notch.
The effects are what the movie is really all about and, yes, with CGI graphics improving by the moment, what looks REAL in one film appears artificial before you finish your popcorn. SPIDERMAN's effects work very, very well. There is a feel of the real world, of gravity & physics in all their movements.
It's believable.
My sole quibble was the Green Goblin's outfit and it's a minor quibble at that. I was happily able to suspend my disbelief throughout the entire show.
Grab a copy if you haven't already. It's good for multiple viewings and serves as an example of what Hollywood can do when they get it right.

5* Amazing Spider-Man!

Created: 24/02/11
This movie is simply amazing for Spider-man fans, like me and my kids!

Sam Rami is a real fan of comic book heroes and is a true Spider-man fan! What he gave us is what everyone thinks of Spider-man and his history.

Tobey Maguire plays Peter Parker just the way he was described in the book! Kristen Dunst also was excellent in Mary Jane's role.

"With great power, comes great responsibility."

This got my Spidey senses tingling

Created: 13/01/06
If you grew up on the Spider-man comic or cartoons, you have to get this movie. Never before has a comic book movie captured the concept and dreams of the original. This movie is the first of a revolution of comic book movie making.

As is pulled directly from the pages of the comic book, this movie draws on the naive Peter Parker and his dream to become more than the nerdy, oft-over looked scientist. Each of the characters are very well kept to the comic book tradition and well-known stories. The story line, action and script are a come to life comic book. The story line will have you racing back to your closet to take your collection out of its protective sleeves and reading them (well if you have a collection, I don't). There are great lines throughout and a series of intriguing additions that show you how small Spidey's universe is and how easily it will be to grow this franchise to include each character throughout the Spider-man line of comics.

Awesome movie!

Tobey Maguire was cast perfectly for the role of Spiderman. I highly enjoyed this film from beginning to end with a great cast to boot. I found it very entertaining and fun to wtach with good humor and superb acting, I especially love Kirsten Dunst and her character is just so likable. If you haven't yet seen this one, do it. I prefer the first out of all the Spiderman films but I have to say they are all wonderful. Loved it!!

Spiderman-A great job of taking the comic pages and making them come to life on the big screen. This film uses special effects in a way that allows your imagination to run wild with belief in this fictional character. This film pulls it off, in that it actually allows the viewer to re-live the comic story, without using mere cartoon figures to portray the story. Great acting by Toby MacGuire as Spiderman, as well as his girl-next-door, ever-so-sweet girlfriend, and simply outrageous villians. Must see for any comic book fan.
