Album Notes
Keane: Richard Hughes , Tom Chaplin, Tim Rice-Oxley.Personnel: Tom Chaplin (vocals); Andy Green (programming).Audio Mixer: Mark "Spike" Stent.Having won both critical and commercial acclaim for their debut album, HOPES AND FEARS, British band Keane pushes the hook-infested keyboard-rock on their sophomore effort in a darker, moodier direction. But UNDER THE IRON SEA features an intense, romantic brand of melancholy, with the trio of Tom Chaplin, Richard Hughes, and Tim Rice-Oxley vamping their way through vaulting rock melodies and power ballads, all without the aid of a single guitar. There are plenty of deliciously chewy guitar-like sounds, though, that Keane achieves by feeding electric pianos and synthesizers through various effects pedals and studio gear. The album begins with the gloomy pop gem "Atlantic," in which Chaplin broods over layers of swelling synths and insistent drum work before the song resolves into a clearing of pure melody. The song showcases Chaplin's soaring vocals, which are at points as tortured as Thom Yorke's and at others smoothly reminiscent of Freddie Mercury. On "Is It Any Wonder?" the verses strut along anxiously until a barely-in-control keyboard riff winds the song up into its gleeful chorus. Filled with moving, melodic rock, Keane's solid second effort points to further sonic expansions to come.

Editorial Reviews
3 stars out of 5 -- Opening track 'Atlantic' has dark, dreamy quality they haven't displayed hitherto, 'Broken Toy' is jazzy and swoonsome...[and] 'Hamburg Song' is a gorgeously wistful ballad...

4 stars out of 5 -- The lyrics may be downbeat, but musically there's all sorts of festival-friendly, stomach-clenching brightness...
Q

UNDER THE IRON SEA coats the group's typically hand-wringing lyrics with layers of symphonic embellishment. -- Grade: A-
Entertainment Weekly

3 stars out of 5 -- [With] lovely, piano-driven sounds....UNDER THE IRON SEA boasts an embarrassment of melodic riches...
Spin

3 stars out of 5 -- [With] bigger doses of atmospheric keyboard...it offers some of the same tuneful pleasures of the debut, with big-voiced Tom Chaplin digging into his big bag of swooping choruses.

Better than Hopes & Fears - Maybe even best CD of 2006

Created: 09/12/06
This album is chock FULL of piano driven beautiful songs, all woven together with an underlying central theme. I did NOT fall in love Hopes & Fears, so I went into this purchase reluctantly. Iron Sea is darker, with touches of anger and sadness - key ingredients to meaningful songwriting. Keane completely won me over with this album. I think its one of the best, if not the best album of 2006.

Louder, rockier. I'll wait for the 3rd album

Created: 04/08/06
Keane's 1st album is one of my favorites. Sentimental, sensitive, and laid back it may be. And I loved that. I especially like the nostalgic overtones of bands from my youth, especially that Ultravox piano sound, and the song-writing and vocal similarities with Travis. Some might have felt it was too samey, and it's possibly true.

The new album is definitely not more of the same. Louder, angrier, rockier. Personally, I miss the quieter side of Keane, but I think it is great to see the band has a broad repertoir, and it will certainly make for a better live show.

Can't wait for the difficult 3rd album. Under the Iron Sea bodes well for it.

Keane just keeps getting better

Created: 18/06/06
this band just cant get better than it already is, this album is as great as the last one or even better, the sound has changed a little since hopes and fears, but in a good way, and still keeps the same essence, for this i give them an A+ this is without a single doubt a must.

Wow! Keane still at their best.

Absolutely love Keane. I have the first CD and have bought every song I don't have. Their follow-up album, Under the Iron Sea, is fabulous. It's a bit more rock than their first, but Keane still shines. Buy it if your a die-hard fan!
