Movie synopsis

The expertly crafted 2007 haunted-house movie THE ABANDONED puts an original sheen on the well-worn tradition of the haunted house flick. Shot in Bulgaria but set in Russia, the movie centers around Marie (Anastasia Hille), an American born in Russia and abandoned as an infant. Marie returns to Russia 40 years later to visit the family estate with her brother, Nicolai (Karl Roden), who was also abandoned, but raised in Russia. Together they explore the old homestead in the hopes of rediscovering their pasts and unearthing the truth about the family they never knew. Like any haunted-house movie worth its salt, THE ABANDONED is all about the psychic residue left in the house following a tragedy. In this case, the spirit of Marie and Karl's father has summoned them back to the family home in order to finish the foiled infanticide he was attempting decades ago. The manifestations of the past--i.e. the things that go bump in the night--are terrifying. Director Nacho Cerda's cinematic "boo!s" come at the least expected moments and in unique forms, and his unflinching shots of Marie and Karl's decaying yet persistent doppelgangers offer some of the most chilling images in the movie. Ultimately, THE ABANDONED works because it takes viewer by surprise on so many levels. Thrills and chills abound, but they are delivered in unexpected ways. While the premise isn't entirely original and the script isn't completely free of holes, it is expertly made from a purely filmic standpoint, and there is something unavoidably chilling about the idea of never escaping one's past, particularly when the past is as horrific as the one depicted in THE ABANDONED.

The Abandoned - My Opinion

Well, this one was a total disappointment. I bought this DVD because I love horror movies - but NOT slasher movies, just stories that frighten.

This is not a slasher. It has some gore. Some goo. Weirdness but not too scary to me (so speaks the queen of terror).

The story of an American woman who discovers she has inherited abandoned properity in Siberia after 40 years, she goes there not to make a claim but to discover her REAL past. Once there, she finds her "twin" brother already in residence in the ramshackle house. A house, moreover, shut off from the rest of the world due to the bridge being down and it's being on an island.

Strange how she got there to begin with. When the bridge was already down. In a truck that hadn't run for 40 years.

Umm, yeah.

The movie has a few twists. Such as: things that have been decayed for 40 years suddenly coming to life and being as new (or trying to attack), hidey-holes within the house to get lost in, the two having visions of themselves (their dopplegangers) as they are soon to be...yeah, the dopplegangers are pretty creepy. And the pig scene is really gory but, then again, I don't like gore, I like creepy.

That lady is quite something using that big old gun, she makes the guy, her brother, look like a wimp! That's a plus. Kind of Sigourney Weaver without the looks or muscle.

The naked girl that shows up needs to lift some weights or something. Maybe go to the beach, get a tan, she's lookin' awfully blue. Stop leading guys off to get eaten by pigs, that's a no-no.

Even though I know some who deserved it, I can't recall ever leading some jerk off to my sty so my pigs could eat him. Wish I'd thought of it, though.

All in all, it's not worth the price of rental. I have higher hopes for some of it's beginning reviews of coming movies.

Hope I didn't insult anyone.

Why did it have to end that way?

Created: 11/01/09
In the begining this movie was very interesting and mysterious. It kept my attention for the first hour. I love mysteries. But towards the end it got weird and a little disturbing. I like being scared but I was bothered by the ending because of the violence towards babies. The writer should have given a little more past history of the family dynamics and issues to help the viewer understand why it ended in such tragedy. This movie left me wondering why did he do it? Was he crazy, jealous or just evil. With a family like that they were better off abandoned and should have never went back.
