SUSAN HAYWARD'S BREAKTHROUGH ROLE
Created: 23/02/07
Adam (Warner Baxter) and his wife (Fay Wray who has a small role) has four sons. They hire a foreign governess (lovely Ingrid Bergman in her second US film) to care for Adam's charges. After the death of Mrs. Stoddard and the market crash, Bergman is forced to return to Europe only to return at the beginning of WWII. The sons are grown and the viewer may be puzzled as to why she was asked to return, but this is part of the plot. Enter one of the sons with his new bride (Susan Hayward). She and Berman immediately have a mutual dislike for each other. Hayward plays a conniving vixen who is after the oldest son and drinks too heavily. Bergman saves her from a potential family scandal by taking her place in the eldest son's bedroom and at the end of the movie, Susan's true colors are brought to light. This role displays a very young Susan Hayward and she plays the part to the hilt with zeal. She steals the movie. There has been some mention that she was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar, but to date, it has never been proven (although she deserved it). The cast is outstanding in their roles with Susan stealing the spotlight. This movie is one of the most expensive to buy new in a store, as it can range from 19-25 bucks. The video transfer, is at times, not very good. But overall, the quality is fine. This has been rated a family movie but should not be viewed by younger children due to the content (made in 1941). Otherwise, it is worthy in any collection.

Adam had 4 Sons

This is a good, despite one really awkward scene. Overall its a good plus drama with Ingrid Bergman. One of Adams sons marries a woman who is nothing more than a user, & a lying piece of trash basically..Performances were all good, but I became aware of something really odd
When the family becomes broke they send Ingrid back to Russia (she is a family housekeeper) until they can afford her again
TEN YEARS LATER - she comes back, still the same as she was before she left. Apparently nothing happened to her in 10 years in her life for her to simply return...that to me was very strange...
Otherwise I really enjoy this movie, and for the price I figured what the hell....
