The Addams Family/Addams Family Values (DVD, 2006)

Barry Sonnenfeld, Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia|Theatrical release: 1991|Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

This double feature presents two feature-film versions of the classic 1960s television series THE ADDAMS FAMILY:When long-lost Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd) reappears after 25 years in the Bermuda Triangle, Morticia (Anjelica Huston) and Gomez (Raul Julia) ecstatically begin plans for a celebration that will wake the dead. Meanwhile, an evil lawyer is plotting ways to get at the ghoulish family's fortunes--which are stashed somewhere within a secret vault inside the family mansion. Only the daughter, Wednesday (played by the brilliant and stunningly stoic Christina Ricci), and the detached servant, Thing, suspect that something rotten is afoot. But can they prove anything before the vault is found and the Addams family is plunged into poverty? THE ADDAMS FAMILY (1991) is not only the cartoon and television family's film premiere but is also the directorial debut of talented cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld. It has a winningly dark sense of humor that manages to be both lighthearted and macabre. In ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES (1993), Barry Sonnenfeld has performed the remarkable feat of making a sequel even more entertaining than its predecessor. The charmingly creepy Addams family (based on characters originally created by the morbid Charles Addams) have two new additions, mustachioed baby Pubert and sunny nanny Debbie Jellinsky. While Debbie (wonderfully played by Joan Cusack) charms the adults of the family, particularly Uncle Fester, the children discover that she is actually a serial killer called the Black Widow. The children are soon shipped off to summer camp as part of nanny dearest's diabolical plot. It's at Camp Chippewa that some of the funniest scenes occur, particularly one in which Wednesday tells genuinely terrifying ghost stories to the other campers and another that features both Addams children being sent the Harmony Hut as punishment for trying to escape. Sonnenfeld and production designer Ken Adams (no relation) make sure that each minute is a pleasure to look at by creating a feast of dark visions and macabre sight gags. ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES will be most enjoyed by those with a taste for flip gallows humor.

Addams Family 4.5/5 Addams Family Values 5/5

Created: 22/09/06
I would rate Addams Family a 4.5/5 and Addams Family Values a 5/5

Addams Family the movie is a remake of the classic show with the same name. It includes an all-star cast of Angelica Houston (Morticia), Christina Ricci (Wednesday), Raul Julia (Gomez), and Christopher Loyd (Uncle Fester).

In the first movie Uncle Fester is introduced to the family, is he possible a fake? The kids play the electric chair game and steal stop signs. Fester may be part of an evil scheme to take the Addams money. Near the end of the movie is my favorite part, when we meet the entire family of freaks and monsters.

Addams Family Values is really one of my favorite comedies of all time. The Addams give birth to a child and Wednesday and Pugsly unsuccessfully try to kill him. The kids are send to summer camp where they have to partake in all the "normal" camping activities like ghost stories and a camp Thanksgiving play. Wednesday, the evil mastermind she is, hijacks control of the play and embarasses all involved.

Both movies are excellent, but if you are going to buy one of them I would recommend buying the sequel.

Great fun! Brought memories back!

Our children recently discovered the original Addams Family TV series online, so we decided to get these movies. While they are a quite bit more macabre than the series, they were loads of fun. Christina Ricci did a wonderful job portraying Wednesday Addams, such a deadpan performance. The chemistry between Morticia and Gomez was clear throughout both movies. Christopher Lloyd's performance was extremely creepy and fun. In the second movie, Joan Cusack was a hoot, especially her slide show! Both movies actually had a plot, it wasn't just showcasing their antics with no purpose. If you're into this type of movie, you should consider these, a real bargain with both on one disk.

The Addams Family/ Family Values

Created: 05/10/06
These movies are GREAT remakes of the original 1960's TV show. The cast features
Angelica Houston, Raul Julia, Joan Cusack, Christopher Lloyd and a very young
Christina Ricci. The movie take place in the present (at that time the 90's) and the quest to find Gomez's long lost brother, Uncle Fester. The second half of this DVD continues the Addams' adventures with a 'bundle' of new fun. These movies are great to really get into the spirit of Halloween, as well as for pure entertainment.

Great title and underlying element of their values...

The cast of both movies are the best around. It depicts a NOT SO AVERAGE family, a bit offbeat, okay they're psycho, but in a funny sort of way. Although the kids are always trying to harm each other, in the second movie, when harm threatens the family, they come together to overcome it. It's creepy and hilarious and the effects are great! The imagination goes wild with this family! You can see the chemistry between the mother and father in every movie. What a loss when Raul Julia (in real life) died!!! Grrrrrrrrrr... Every one is AMAZING! You're really gonna enjoy this movie!!! Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday Addams, was dead on in both movies and the scene where she smiles is tragically funny!!!
I love this movie and we watch it often.

Excellent package deal

Created: 03/01/09
This two pack combines the only two worthwhile movies of the Addams Family together for a great price. These are both very watchable and entertaining on repeated viewings. The casting was superb, with very notable performances by a young Christina Ricci, Angelica Huston, and Christopher Lloyd. The story lines were also reminiscent of both the successful TV series and the original cartoons by Charles Addams. There was a third movie, but it was abysmal, featuring Daryll Hannah as Morticia (a horrible choice) and Tim Curry as Gomez (an even worse selection). Don't even bother looking for it. Just consider the two pack the final purchase until something comes along that can match the outstanding performance by Ricci and the others.
