    Movie synopsis

Capturing all at once the wistful emotions of early adulthood, the chaotic freedom of youth, and that uniquely wonderful boredom of summer, Greg Mottola’s coming-of-age comedy, ADVENTURELAND, splits the difference between his commercial breakthrough, SUPERBAD, and his underrated debut, THE DAYTRIPPERS. ADVENTURELAND follows recent college grad James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) as he slogs his way through summer as a games attendant at a local amusement park, where he learns about the shady goings-on of the carny’s world and is introduced to an assortment of weirdos, stoners, goons, and other lost souls. Among that last group is the angsty Em (Kristen Stewart), who captures James’s heart despite her involvement with the park bad-boy, a rocker-turned-maintenance-man (Ryan Reynolds) who seduces women with a dubious story about jamming with Lou Reed.Though the movie has its share of vomit scenes and erection jokes, Mottola is surprisingly restrained in his use of gross-out humor (particularly given SUPERBAD’s near Shakespearean vulgarity), with much of the film’s more blatant hilarity coming courtesy of Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig as the park’s completely unhinged yet utterly in love managers. At its core, ADVENTURELAND is really nothing more than a coming-of-age story set in a colorful locale--the monotonous siren call to "Step right up!" compels after-work beer blasts, random make-out sessions, and drunken existential yearning. Yet what in any other film would be played for cheap laughs and easy smiles is here used to conjure the ineffable mystery of a summer romance. Through a mixture of pleasing performances, a nuanced script, and a brilliant soundtrack (featuring the Replacements, Husker Du, David Bowie, and, of course, Lou Reed), Mottola has created a bittersweet delight that will stay with the viewer long after the midway goes dark.

Too much Hype for this barely above average film

    Created: 19/09/09
I really did not want to give this film a 4 star rating considering it is really a 3.5 film. The story is interesting but runs extremely slow.

Basically a High School graduate named James is forced to take on a summer job after his father loses the money to send his son on vacation in Europe and to college in New York. James attempts to find real work but winds up working the games booth for an amusement park named Adventureland. His first day on the job he is nearly stabbed by a cheater, but gets saved by his future love interest Emily (Kristen Stewart) or Em for short. There the story becomes average and appears to be an attempt to remake a slightly different version of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" or "Breaking all the Rules" (the one made in 1985, and not the one that starred Annie Potts).

I will not give away much more of the story here since I believe it is worth watching at least one time. But good news to Ryan Reynolds (Van Wilder) fans, he is in this one as a out of work musician who has a thing for young female carnival workers. There are some drug and alcohol related scenes in this film for those interested in that sort of thing as well. So it is worth spending 2 or 3 dollars for, but not much more than that. Because eventually this film could become another dust collector sitting on your DVD movies shelf.

Good acting and an interesting story

Jesse Eisenberg (The Education of Charlie Banks) and Kristen Stewart (Twilight) star in this coming of age comedy about a young man who's life has been turned upside down when he finds out that not only are his plans to visit Europe for the summer out, but his dream of going to Graduate School in New York with his buddy are on hold as well after his mother informs him that they are having 'difficult' times with the family resources. So James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) ends up working at the only place that will hire him, Adventureland.

While at the job he meets the usual assortment of misfits and he meets Em (Kristen Stewart). One thing leads to another and you have a fine film about young love and the trials and pains associated with it. All from the same director who brought us SUPERBAD.

This film is pretty good in that it is entertaining and it does have a flow to it. If you enjoyed Superbad you will enjoy this movie as well.

Rated 4 of 5 for good acting and an interesting story

    Uneventful and dull.

    Created: 03/04/10
Difficult at times to stay interested in the plot, if there was one. All main characters were in my opinion very lame. No humor at all. This movie was not one of the nicest I have seen all year. In fact, if it made a lot of money I can't see it. Whom every told Kristen Stewart that she could act, must have based it on the Twiight movies that in my opinion did not required acting. The only bright light in the picture was seeing Ryan Reynolds face.

    Funny, engaging, but slow paced.

    Created: 08/09/09
Full of wit and snappy retorts, this movie is entertaining and comical in a verbal sense. A lack of diversity in setting and theme; however, the superb acting by Stewart (Em) and Eisenberg (James) makes up for the slow pace. The film aptly describes the life of a teenager in the 80's and also manages to capture some of the greatest songs from the time period. If you're looking for an exciting, edge of your seat movie...look elsewhere. If a coasting trip through the 80's is your goal then this movie is for you.

    The name is suiting.

Great story, there were a few hard cuts that weren't very aesthetically pleasing. But some of the plot lines and situations were creative. Although there were a couple slow parts in the movie. The characters were good, definitely everyone kept you entertained with their personalities. I'd suggest at least rent this to see if you like it. I was a skeptic, because of mixed reviews. But I take opinions with a grain of salt til I know for myself. But I am glad to have this DVD in my collection.
