Movie synopsis
In the early 1990s, animator Peter Chung presaged the bleak futurism of THE MATRIX with his cutting-edge animated series AEON FLUX. The edgy cult favorite originated as a sequence of film shorts aired as part of MTV's animation showcase, Liquid Television, but proved to be so popular that it was soon expanded into its own full-length series. Moody and stylish, the sci-fi-themed series chronicled the morally ambiguous adventures of its titular antiheroine, Aeon Flux, an acrobatic and bondage-clad secret agent who carried out her mercenary missions in a futuristic, BLADE RUNNER-like society. In addition to a unique visual style that echoed Japanese anime, the series distinguished itself with experimental narrative that eschewed continuity, plot, and even dialogue for a distinctly postmodern slice of sci-fi nihilism. Innovative and highly influential, AEON FLUX is presented in its entirety with this collection that includes both the shorts and the longer episodes in beautifully restored and remastered editions.

) I bought this series because I'd seen one episode when it was airing on MTV back in the day. Thought it looked interesting and the music was kinda cool. Since I didn't have cable, that was the last time I'd seen of the series until eBay. Finally sat through all the episodes, and got confused three episodes in.
Around episode seven, I realized, it's not a series, per say. It's a collection of stand alone episodes that center around the same characters. That's what makes it a series. The dialog half the time is cliche and repetitive, the animation is a bit flaky, but the action definitely was on point. I could see where the movie took a lot of its moves and scenes from.
Overall, a pretty good body of work. Now, if they'd make an actual story line that follows from point A to point Z instead of this standalone type, I'd buy that, too.

Like it says in the DVD extras, MTV introduced us [the video music generation] to Aeon at the beginning of their move away from music videos and into, what i say is the post-modern socio-political realm they now rule. If you want to learn something about the morally vacuous X, Y, and Next-generations, try listening to the commentaries and interviews of the writers and directors. I think you'll find them very enlightening.

I love the groundbreaking animation and the constant envelope pushing. No one was doing what the writers did at this time. A great MTV series and worth at least one viewing.
