    Movie synopsis

In this remake of the 1947 film OUT OF THE PAST, Terry Brogan (Jeff Bridges) is a handsome football player, who has been a top player for his team, the Outlaws. But after he suffers a shoulder injury, the team suddenly fires him, leaving Brogan out of a job and out of money. Nightclub owner Jake Wise (James Woods) hires Brogan to hunt down his runaway girlfriend and the $50,000 she stole from him. Out of options and with Jake holding one of Brogan's old mistakes over his head, Brogan reluctantly agrees. In beautiful Cozumel, Mexico, he not only finds the girl (Rachel Ward) but falls in love with her. However, their romance is shattered when he realizes there's a lot more to the story than Wise told him. In over his head, Brogan finds himself in a fight for the girl, his career, and his survival. Woods is creepy as the threatening Jake Wise, and ex-football star Alex Karras plays coach and ex-football star Hank Sully.

A silly, lazy movie yet also a guilty pleasure

    Created: 17/10/05
Jeff Bridges wasted in a lazy remake of the classic Film Noir "Out of the Past." Bridges plays a football player for the Los Angeles Outlaws (a stand-in for the Raiders) who is cut by the team and down on his luck. He accepts a job as a would-be private eye, tracking down a friend's ex-girlfriend who has skipped town to Cozumel, Mexico, a coastal paradise on the Yucatan Peninsula. Note: I've actually been to Cozumel myself and the hotel where Bridges' character stays looks awfully similar to where my family and I stayed on our vacation there.

Bridges ends up finding his target -- and as played by Rachel Ward, she's quite a temptress (and provides plenty motivation for Bridges to risk his life in order to have her).

James Woods appears in the movie as a slimy bookie, the quintessential bad guy who gets on everybody's nerves. Swoosie Kurtz and Alex Karras (famous footballer from the Detroit Lions...featured prominently in George Plimpton's memoir Paper Lion) also appear in the film.

The director is Taylor Hackford, who has alternated over the years between trite movies like Against All Odds and The Devil's Advocate and more elevate fare like An Officer and a Gentleman. In this film, he goes through the motions and shoots a rather forgettable film from a rather forgettable screenplay.

Now, you must be asking yourself -- I thought he said "guilty pleasure," where's the pleasure here? Well, the pleasure lies in the Bridges-Ward romance and the exotic locales (how they got the OK to film a steamy/violent scene at the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, I have no idea).

Is this movie worth buying on DVD? I bought the movie online myself and I would say that the film delivers enough entertainment value to merit its selling price.

This film isn't Oscar-quality, but it's a fun few hours on the couch.

    Against All Odds

    Created: 08/11/06
This is one of the great date movies of all time. It is an excellent story about obsession, love, betrayal and absolution. The complicated love triangle consists of Jeff Bridges (Brogan), the bad boy professional footbal player who is down on his luck-Racheal Ward (Jesse), the spoiled heiress (who is ten times better looking than Paris Hilton and not a whore)running away from her 'terrible life' and James Woods(Jake Wise)who is a very underrated actor. If you have ever loved someone completely and they have loved you with just as much intensity but being together was all but impossible, this is the movie for you. Nicely done and well filed considering when it was made. The entire film is worth the final few minuets with the portrait/filming of Racheal Ward as Phil Collins sings the theme song. She is gorgeous!

Great movie one of my favorites. I saw this move about 7 times when it first came out. Song in there by Phil Collins. Song just missed song of the year to Stevie Wonder. Rachel Ward is hot in the movie. James Woods plays a great bad guy. Just like his other characters.

    AGAINST ALL ODDS

One of my favorite films of the 1980's. Based on the 1940's film OUT OF THE PAST, it shows life in the fast lane of Hollywood. Interesting plot, beautiful camera work, talented actors and a great Phill Collins theme. Also very interesting director/actor commintary extra features that gives added insight into the production.

Excellent movie, I LOVE the 80's movies!

Great movie from the 80's. Well worth the watch!
If you like(or Love) Phil Collins music like I do the music is good too. Even though Phil Coolins only sings in the ending credits.
The actors do a tremendous job with all the scenes.
