The Air I Breathe (DVD, 2008)

Jieho Lee, Kevin Bacon, Forest Whitaker|Theatrical release: 2007|Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Solid performances from an all-star cast bring this ensemble drama to life. As parallel stories unfold, the viewer discovers unlikely connections between several seemingly unrelated people. Though the film is divided up into segments entitled "Happiness," "Pleasure," "Sorrow," and "Love," the mood is melancholy overall. Splattered with violent acts, THE AIR I BREATHE touches on the aforementioned themes and more, pondering the meaning of life and death through characters who live on the edge and risk everything for the thrill of joy, chance, and escape, even if that means death. The film begins with Forest Whitaker playing a bored and frustrated nine-to-fiver who feels stuck in his routine. After taking a huge risk on a whim and losing it all, the doomed businessman has the unlucky fortune of meeting with Brendan Fraser's character, a numb hit-man who feels no remorse until crossing paths with a troubled pop star (Sarah Michelle Gellar). At the center of much of this chaos is Fingers (Andy Garcia), a ruthless villain intent on killing anyone who gets in the way of his success. Though the plot at times feels contrived with all its strategically placed coincidences, writer-director Jieho Lee anchors the film with clever editing and a thoughtful script, which is careful to cover events from multiple points of view. Julie Delpy and Emile Hirsch give dimension to the stories as secondary characters whose actions become central to the plot.

Stellar film from a no-name director.

Before I start, I have to say something: I tend to watch movies haphazardly, meaning I'll watch one for 25 minutes, pause it and then go do something else. Unless I am in a movie theater, I can't spend more than 30 minutes watching a film; except for this one. First thing I noticed while watching this was the sound: it has fantastic music, music that goes from pure drums to orchestrated magic. One thing to note is the dialogue, it's chock full of one-liners that will sadly go unnoticed during a first watch.

In summary, four very different characters' lives come together in an unassuming manner and the presentation is delivered in a fantastic manner. The dialogue from each character is pitch-perfect and the camera angles are well-used. I found myself jumping out of my seat at multiple times and could feel my heart pounding in anticipation at times of suspense waiting for the next scene. Each character did a fantastic job with their part, even the goons.

This is a stellar movie with quite a stunning cast. The problem with movies such as this one lies in the publicity and director's name. I had never heard if the director until I had watched the film and, sad to say, almost passed on watching this intellectually provocative piece of cinema. I tend to base my initial opinion about movies on other peoples' reviews and that can be a good thing; or a bad thing.

This may sound like one of those "embellishing" reviews but I did find a few problems with the film. If you are looking for a movie with deeper meaning or sophisticated explanation, you will not find it here. The dialogue is rich, yes, but the entire plot summary will leave you wanting for more. There are a few flash-backs and they work well from detracting from the current state of things but all in all, there really isn't any ground-breaking life-pondering message in this film. It's a good movie though the ending, as I have said before, will leave you asking for more.

I didn't know what to expect from this film. I thought since the reviews were good I'd give in and buy it. Glad I did! I watched it mainly for Sarah Michelle Gellar, one of my favorite people ever. She shined throughout the entire film. Loved her story! She is a magnificent actress. I also really like Brendan Fraser, still looks as good as he did in Blast from the Past! And Emile Hirsch..hilarious. Even though he had such a small part. The cast was perfect, the film kept my interest and parts of it were gripping. All in all, good to watch, buy it!

One of the best movies of the year

Sarah Michelle Gellar is a great dramatic actress. I have never seen her in such a powerful performance as she was in this film. The movie is different from anything I have everyseen and it is so great how at the very end all of the stories at the end combine and how they are all in someway linked together at the end of the film. If you like anyone who is in this movie or just want to see a film that is different from any other movie than this is the movie for you and I really hope you enjoy it.

I bought it because Sarah Michelle gellar was in it but I knew with the rest of the cast I couldn't go wrong. The entire cast was perfect and Sarah is really shining at this point in her career.I've never heard of the production co. but kudos to them.I put it in the same genre as Pulp Fiction but with a little more human side.A++++
