An A For Akeelah
Created: 09/10/06
Every now and then a movie like this comes along. It doesn't differ that much from any number of other films of this variety of achieving success in spite of the obstacles that must be defeated. However, in this case, what elevate this movie from the pack is that you want to believe in this movie. You don't care about the improbability of it all but the characters make you care about it. In this instance you have two veteran actors in Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett, (who've seemed to have played everbody except Wonder Woman) in very piviotal roles, however, this movie belongs to Keke Palmer as the smart, brash, intelligent yet uninspired Akeelah. Like so many other talented interurban youth of this era, Akeelah has no outlet for her gift. Surrounded by the situation of her neighborhood, a single parent household,an older sister who has become a parent herself and a brother who just want to hang. Into this world comes the discovery that Akeelah is a whiz at spelling and the people who try to encourage her to show and hone her talent. The rest of the movie is geared to this effort. Laurence Fishburne as a former participant in the national spelling bee, who harbors deep seated grief and emotions of his own... but this movie belong to the young actors and how they are able to forge friendships and learn to become competitive in pursuit of a goal, yet remain kids in this greedy world. This is a feel good movie that works because someone took enough time to get it right. This movie feels good because it is about all the right things, love, family, community, inspiration, and achievement. This is a winner in every way regardless of whether it is a commercial success or not. The cast is outstanding and the movie is not to be missed.

With an aptitude for words, 11-year-old Akeelah Anderson is determined to spell her way out of South Los Angeles, entering scores of local contests and eventually landing a chance to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Despite discouragement from her mother, Akeelah gets support from her bookish tutor, her principal and proud members of her community.

I saw this movie on an airplane flight from Asia and fell in love with it. It's one of those nail biting films that takes you from hopelessness to glory all in two hours. And all of this through a middle school girl from a poor area of Los Angeles who gets excited about learning when she gets involved in a spelling bee. Our favorite part is when Akeelah's family, friends and others in her neighborhood help her study to prepare for the national competition. So in the end when Akeela wins the victory isn't just hers alone, but a triumph for her entire community. Along the way we see the power of good friendships, hard work, and love. A great movie all around. Highly recommended.

I missed seeing this movie when it was out in the theaters, so I rented it. After watching it, I knew it was a "must have" movie to add to my collection! Keke Palmer, Laurence Fishbourne, and Angela Bassett are a perfect combination for the story line. Akeelah's (Keke Palmer) love for words leads her to spelling contests, and ultimately to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Along the way, she gains new friends, a new understanding of her "own self", and a sense of worth in learning from her mentor. The intensity of the movie is in seeing that Akeelah isn't the only character who grows in this story... it leaves us with the knowledge that we are all so completely intertwined in other's lives, whether we want to be or not, as we travel through life. A heartwarming story that will leave you feeling good about human nature.

Outstanding but simple story of a young girl succeeding at a venture despite the odds. They used to make films like this one all the time but they were mostly sports oriented. This one I saw in the theaters which was rare for me in itself and I loved it tremendously. I definitely wanted a copy of this film to watch continuously which I did. Great performance by Keke Palmer in the title role with good supporting work from Laurence Fishburne, Angela Bassett and Curtis Armstrong.
