Fun Master System Title; Challenging But Short

    Created: 18/12/09
This game has pretty good graphics (colorful and "cutesy") and pretty catchy music. It also has a couple of sampled voices that are done pretty well for a Sega Master System title.

It's a bit challenging at first. For a platformer, more emphasis is given on dodging enemies and running/jumping through the level as fast as you can before your life meter runs out without getting hit or falling off a cliff into a pit as much as possible. Unlike Bonk or Sonic or Mario or the first Alex Kidd, you can't bounce on or run though or punch/head-butt your enemies; you only had a fireball attack which only lasts in short durations as the occasional power-up you pick up on the way. It felt a little awkward at first but after a few rounds I got used to the gameplay, and eventually I managed to finish it after 1 and 1/2 hours of (actually pretty fun) gameplay.

Overall, I liked this title much better than Alex Kidd: the Enchanted Castle on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, even if it is much shorter in length and did not even have boss battles of other platformers, which I thought were the worst parts of this game. Also missing were the Janken (rock-paper-scissors) matches of some of the other Alex Kidd games - this missing aspect I didn't mind at all. However, the wacky, odd, and colorful character designs kept drawing me in like Parodius, especially the rolling heads and the weird Punk Rocker enemies or the puppies whose barks are definitely more deadly than their bites. I'm definitely going to play this one over and over again.

Definitely not for everyone, but for those looking to rekindle their desire to collect titles for the Sega Master System (and a bit weary of the same Hollywood-blockbuster-esque first/third-person action-shooter game available nowadays) this title is recommended and a nice breath of fresh air.

    Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars

This one is going to be short because there's not much to say. There is not much to this game. It was so boring I ignored any point there was to the game. Let me sum it up.

In the first couple of levels (I got bored and quit), you play as this kid and you are trying to get to the end of the level. There are enemies in the levels and there isn't much you can do about it. I tried jumping on them, that didn't work. I tried pressing the other button and that doesn't do anything, except I guess I picked up a power up at some point cause when I pressed the button, it shot something and killed some enemies.

There's also a small timer and every time you take a hit, it takes a good chunk of time off the clock. There's this thing that floats that you can pick up, but I never figured it out. Sometimes it added time, sometimes it took away time and sometimes it did nothing. Pointless.

This is one of those games you try to forget. I'd just stick to Psycho Fox.
