Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker (DVD, 2006, Full Frame)

Geoffrey Sax, Ewan McGregor, Alex Pettyfer|Theatrical release: 2006|Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Based on the New York Times bestsellers by Anthony Horowitz, ALEX RIDER: OPERATION STORMBREAKER brings the young adult adventure series to the big screen. Like an adolescent James Bond, Alex Rider (Alex Pettyfer) has been trained since birth for a career as a spy. The only problem is, he doesn't know it. It's not until his beloved uncle Ian Rider (Ewan McGregor) dies that Alex learns of his intended purpose in life. At just 14, Alex is not sure he can do all that is required of a super spy, but without much choice he is taken under the wing of Britain's secret intelligence service. Calling itself M16, the Special Operations Division sends Alex on a mission which could save or cost millions their lives. As Alex embarks on his greatest challenge yet, he learns all is not what it seems, with the lines blurring between his obvious enemies and those who are supposedly on his side. But equipped with super spy training, Alex is prepared to deal with whatever comes his way, whether it's in the form of deadly computer technology or in Stormbreaker creator Darrius Sayle (Mickey Rourke). Packed with charming performances by actors including Ewan McGregor, Stephen Fry, Mickey Rourke, Bill Nighy, and Alicia Silverstone, ALEX RIDER delivers something for kids and adults alike. Containing just enough sinister elements, the playful film brings the book series to life with nonstop action, a clever storyline, and teenage-oriented spy tools like a powerful acid in the form of zit cream.

Operation Stormbreaker

I bought this DVD to show to a group of my students. Many of the kids had previously read the novel and are hooked on the "Alex Rider" series. The kids loved the movie and can't wait to see the next one. For some reason, this film didn't do well in the US but was a much bigger "hit" in Europe.
Basicaly, the film is, as many reviewers stated, a junior James Bond. It is action packed, with not enough character development but that is rather typical of most kid films. There are clearly defined "good" guys, such as Alex, who is played by an unknown actor; at least to all of my students Alex Pettyfer and his uncle's housekeeper Jack Starbright, played by Alicia Silverstone. The bad guys are Mr. Sayle, Mr.Grin and Ms. Vole. It is easy to dismiss this movie as a "kid" film, but there are many nice features in this film. the action keeps the movie moving and interest high.

Alex Rider 2006 Movie - Good fun....

Created: 03/02/07
Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker is a fine family film, especially if your family loves the Alex Rider book series. It lives up to the book reasonably well, but works well in its own right. Some scenes are portrayed differently from the book, without changing too much basic information, so that the story can be better told visually, giving the movie a fairly good flow. The action is quite well done, and there's a fair amount of it; the characters are interesting; and Pettyfer is a very attractive, believable young hero. He's quite good at the physical stunts, and portrays the right mix of courage and bravado one would expect to see in a young man who has sustained the losses and demands of Alex Rider's life. Let's hope the producers will keep their faith in the Alex Rider series, even though, unfortunately, the movie didn't do well in the U.S. It seems it just didn't get marketed in the U.S. the way it deserved. While the movie isn't as polished or complex as it could have been, even given some of its cartoony characters, which could have been given a weirder, British-humor twist for interest, it's far, far above the usual young-teen movie, such as Agent Cody Banks. Yikes! What were they thinking? Anyway, Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker is well worth seeing, even owning, since it's not available through most of the movie rental stores.

This movie is great!

I purchased this movie because my family likes to read the Alex Rider book series. The movie, while a little different from the first book, is remarkably well done. It retains the characters and storyline from the book.
Why do we like the books so well? Alex Rider is a teenage James Bond, who doesn't want to be one. But he is drawn in by his skills and sense of honor to help the people around him. There is action, conflicts, and personable characters. It is a great read that leads into a great movie.

Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker

My son brought home a book from his school library. It was from the Alex Rider series. He read it cover to cover (200 pages) and urged me to do the same. I did, and I really enjoyed it. This movie follows suit. If you, or your children, enjoy Spy Kids or James Bond you will like this movie. It has a recognizable cast, it's well written, directed and produced. A must-have for family movie night and may encourage your child to seek out the books and start reading a little bit more ( which is something we parents want more of ).
Even if your child doesn't pick up the books, it's a good clean movie that they can watch and enjoy.

NOT JUST FOR KIDS!

This "family" movie is done really well. It's like a mini-James Bond flick with lots of action and thrills. Young teens will love it and adults can also enjoy! The young actor that plays Alex Rider is sure to be an a rising star!
