Album Notes
Alice In Chains: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Mike Inez (bass); Sean Kinney (drums).Recorded at Bad Animals, Seattle, Washington."Grind" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance."Again" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.Personnel: Jerry Cantrell, Layne Staley (vocals, guitar); Mike Inez (bass guitar); Sean Kinney (drums).Audio Mixer: Toby Wright.Recording information: Bad Animals, Seattle, WA.Photographer: Rocky Schenck.Much like the overcast and murky weather that Seattle is known for, Alice In Chains' music is dour, plumbing the darker side of life that's cluttered with dashed hopes and inner turmoil. The group's self-titled third album continues along this path, peppered by Layne Staley's nihilistic lyrics and guitarist Jerry Cantrell's weighty playing. The three-legged dog on the cover guarantees that no warm and fuzzy feelings will get aroused.When Staley states "How proud are you being able/To gather faith from fable?" on "God Am," he reflects the feelings of the displaced generation AIC sing to. Elsewhere, imagery of drug addiction floats through "Sludge Factory," as Cantrell's plodding riffs and the sound of a disjointed conversation paint an aural picture of nodding out. The darkened hues coloring the sound of ALICE IN CHAINS make it a perfect rainy-day record.

Alice in CHAINS best ---> A L B U M ! ! !

Alice In Chains 1995 third album titled "Alice In Chains" is in my opinion this grunge/stoner/heroin rock bands best performance! Not the most popular set of tracks until there MTV's Unplugged concert which features many of these tracks! Great tracks include FROGS and GOD AM!!! It is also Layne Staley's last full length album with the band.

I had the cassette bought new in the 90's and wore the thing out, must have played it 200 times. I could only salvage 4 tracks by ripping to digital, so when I saw this one for such a great price I grabbed it. Layne was a moth to the flame of smack during this period and it shows all through the material..a chilling dark exercise in creativity under the pressure of a slow agonizing downward spirl. Jerry Cantrell's two vocal & lyrics numbers "Heaven Beside You" and "Over Now" are right in Layne's veins, so to speak--songs about people and relationships that need to be tossed aside, but are lighter and more FM-friendly. A great Alice in Chains album. Don't forget Layne.

Alice In Chains - Alice In Chains (CD 1995)

AIC's music is eternal--the guitar, rhythm, and especially the tone & lyrical style gets me everytime I listen to 'em. I haven't heard any group since 'em that gets me in the same way. Very guttural! I mean this in a dualistic sense. For one, I identify with their lyrics, a lot! Also, the style seems to hit me in a sincere and real fashion, unlike a lot of other groups today that fail to impact.

Deffinitely must check out "God Am" on this album.
