Album Notes
Original score composed and conducted by James Horner.Performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.ALIENS: THE DELUXE EDITION contains an extra 30 minutes of music from ALIENS that was not included on the original soundtrack.Original score composed by James Horner.Includes liner notes by Nick Redman.Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch (DigiPrep, Hollywood, California). When James Horner accepted scoring duties for James Cameron's sci-fi epic Aliens, the composer was an inexperienced action specialist best known for two unremarkable Star Trek sequel scores that owed much and added little to Jerry Goldsmith's famous theme for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Aliens, too, was a sequel to a Goldsmith scored blockbuster. But this time Horner's efforts stood firmly on their own, borrowing little more than general mood from Goldsmith's Alien score. The dense ambient orchestrations and inventive electronic percussion used in Aliens were so well received in the film music community that many of the film's cues have become action flick clichés. Aliens also brought Horner his first Academy scoring nomination despite the fact that dissonant sci-fi action compositions by no-name newcomers are not often recognized. (Horner may have benefited from weak competition; ironically, Leonard Rosenmann was also nominated that year for boldly going where Horner had gone twice before: another Star Trek sequel.) Though highly effective in the context of the film, the Aliens score is far from Horner's most listenable. There are some compelling melodies particularly in the opening and closing credits, but the bulk of the CD is dominated by jarring strings and driving percussion that don't work very well as background music. Film music buffs and Aliens diehards may enjoy Varese Sarabonde's 2001 "Deluxe Edition," which contains 16 previously unreleased cues. But casual listeners will probably be more than satisfied with the original version. ~ Evan Cater

Have you ever been mistaken for a fan?

I am a fan of this movie, and this is why I bought this album.

I've watched this movie a 100 times, (or maybe 150?), a few scenes seems dated, but the music is still fresh. The creepy, the heroic, and the action tracks are all here.

True funny story, yesterday when I unwrapped it to listen to it for the first time, the creepy tracks made the hairs on the back of my neck tingle. It was probably because I was alone at home, it was dark, and stormy outside. It's funny because the same tracks didn't affect me while watching the film, it was probably the visuals in the way :p

My top favorite tracks (in no particular order)
-Ripley's Rescue
-Futile Escape
-Going After Newt
-Bishop's Countdown
-Queen to Bishop

The bonus tracks were interesting. I'll call those the rough draft of what we got on film.

Don't bother with the original soundtrack release, get this one instead. Unless you can get the original album for $1. Even then, I still say get this one instead.

If you're a soundtrack collector, or a fan of this film, or an aspiring composer, I highly recommend this deluxe edition.

Thank-you James Horner for the wonderful job on this classic film.

Feel the action, through orchestration

James Horner is a very gifted composer and the Aliens soundtrack showcases his talent. He borrows heavily from his previous sci-fi scores (Star Trek 2 and 3) and you can even sense some "2001" applications used (especially in the opening theme). That being said, this soundtrack is a rollercoaster of a score and any fan of the genre would be happy to add this to their collection. Ranging from gentle string arrangements (that almost have a lullaby effect) to rocking horns and percussion (that will have you playing "head guitar") there is plenty of variety for anyone who appreciates great movie scores.
A must buy for James Horner, Alien, or sci-fi fans alike!

Aliens Soundtrack

Created: 28/05/10
The symphonic music from movie soundtracks is often hard to beat. A couple more favorites of mine are the soundtracks from Star Trek First Contact and the new Star Trek movie. Truly first rate composing and instrumentals!! The title song to Star Trek First Contact is one of the best!

I am a huge fan of James Horner. His compositions are the greatest in the world. I am also a huge fan of James Cameron! I love all his movies. I have most of James Horner's music, but I didn't have this one. So I decided to buy this CD "Aliens" It is Excellent! Exactly what I wanted. Thanks James and James!

Great Album

This is my favorite movie of all time. ALIENS puts you through the full range of emotion from crying to laughing to fear to laughing (again) to triumphant. The soundtrack reflects the emotion of the movie, eerie, scary, fast-paces, slow and relaxed.
