Aliens Vs. Predator - Requiem (Blu-ray Disc, 2009, 2-Disc Set)

The Brothers Strause, Steven Pasquale, Reiko Aylesworth|Theatrical release: 2007|Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

ALIEN VS. PREDATOR relegated its intergalactic grudge match to Antarctica, keeping most of humankind gleefully ignorant. This time around, though, the destruction takes place in suburban America, and those who have been waiting for it finally get to witness facehuggers, alien hybrids, and the dreadlocked Predator wreak some homeland havoc. Directors Colin and Greg Strause (billed as "The Brothers Strause") don't seem concerned with achieving the tension of the original ALIEN and PREDATOR films, instead using their visual effects backgrounds to create a steady stream of monsters, gore, and goo. Picking up where AVP ended, REQUIEM sees Predator on a homebound spacecraft when a baby alien/Predator hybrid bursts from his chest, causing the ship to crash in the Colorado woods. Several facehugger specimens escape, planting eggs down the throats of a hunter and his son. Soon, baby aliens emerge from their bodies and head for town, where ex-con Dallas (Steven Pasquale), Iraq War vet Kelly (Reiko Aylesworth), pizza delivery boy Ricky (Johnny Lewis), high school heartthrob Jesse (Kristen Hager), and sheriff Morales (John Ortiz) have their own separate encounters with the creatures. The dead Predator's home planet receives a transmission of the alien outbreak, and a fellow denizen of his world is dispatched to clean up the multiplying aliens, eventually causing enough death and destruction for government intervention. This is essentially a slasher film (or FREDDY VS. JASON with aliens), and the characters in REQUIEM are secondary to the creature effects. Fans of the comic books and videogames will appreciate the Strauses‘ adherence to the lore of the series, but others will probably just find thrills in the copious special effects, which are frequent and well-done (if often occurring in darkness). There is also a significant amount of indiscriminant gore in this rightfully R-rated film. A government conspiracy plot thread and an ambiguous ending ensure that this battle isn't over yet.

"[D]ecently rendered. There are a couple of classic horror-film bits in among the sci-fi....Robert Joy is a perfect low-key villain in military guise."

I guess I was hoping for the "Death Race" factor to kick in here... you see, the "Death Race" factor (as I like to call it) is when I watch a movie and think that it pretty much sucks, but somehow remember it as being a half decent movie, so when I finally get around to re-watching it, it turns out that it is in fact a pretty spiffy movie. Alas this was not the case with AVPR.

A Predator spaceship carrying lots of Alien experiments crashes onto a planet when the Alien queen gets loose on the ship. This sets off a battle between the Alien and a lone Predator determined to clear up the mess. Oh yeah, and the planet the ship crashes on? Earth (natch)

So instead of having an epic battle between two iconic monsters, the director (s) - The Strause Brothers decide to turn the movie into a survival horror epic. Sadly, you won't give two chuffs about any of the characters in the film. From the Army mom who is back from the war trying to reconnect with her family, to the ex-con who just wants to get on with his life, and his younger brother who has the hots for a girl in his class. These are just random people that we are supposed to care about, so when they are in danger, we can "care" about their fate. Problem is, five minutes of back-story does not make a rounded character make. At least they have the cute little girl who sole purpose in life seems to be that she can scream very loudly every two minutes.

The main problem with the film is that the movie is dark. Not dark as in "oooh, creepy" I mean dark as in "what the hell is going on?" I watched this on Blu Ray and half of the time I could not tell who was the Alien and who was the Predator. It doesn't help that the first battle takes place in a SEWER, but that's not dark enough, so they move the battle to NIGHTTIME, wait? Still can see some action? no problem lets add some RAIN and just to add a black cherry on the top of the dark, dark, dark chocolate cake, lets blow up the towns power station, so there is NO LIGHT AT ALL!!

Yeah, this was not good the first time and even more tedious the second. Not recommended.

In this age if sequils, movies about a comic on a Cracker Jack box or a movie with too many fricken actors it is hard to find a good movie that makes you feel the way you did when first watching Alien and Aliens. Aliens vs Predator brings you right back to a time when the movie rating board did not terrorize the movie itself and chop it to bloody squeeling bits. AVP is very much true to H R Geigers origional view of his Alien creation, With the seemingly sexual scenes of the Hybrid pumping his eggs down the throats of women you would almost expect some Bow Chicka Wow Wow music for the score. This movie also goes back to a time in movies like Jaws where nobody is safe, not even children. This movie is an awesome flick to watch and jump to as the Face Huggers attach to a father and son hunting. The only true downfall of this movie is the ending with a vague conversation between two big wigs that basically states yet Another sequil. This movie deserves two Bloody Digits Up

AVP-Requiem

I own the whole collection and just started to purchase Blu Ray discs recently.I could'nt pass on such a great deal,Item is just like described in listing. About the movie itself: Well...the cast of caracters was'nt the best to date, however, in the Avp series the main caracters are the Aliens and Predators so if you are a movie buff that like the series this movie will not dissapoint you, and of course just like any movie in the series it was an open ending for the next chapter.

I loved the quality of the picture, the audio was terrific. The story was well conceived and attention grabbing. I thought the film work was great for Blu-Ray. A true classic in Alien vs Predator storyline.

Amazingly Awful

This movie was absolutely horrible. We went from Aliens 1-3 being awesome (not counting that 4th so-so one) and Predator (not counting the 2nd so-so one) to AVP (one big pile of steaming ____) to AVP-R.

Why I hated this movie:
1) no character at all: In Aliens and Predator we always had a character that was hardcore (aka Ripley or Arnold), but it was like they took those characters from the old movies and put generic crappy cardboard cutouts of them and used them in the movie.
2) Why did the Pred-Alien look like something Jim Henson created?

The End. Don't waste your money.
