Movie synopsis

Cameron Crowe's career trajectory reads like a true Hollywood story--he started out as a 15-year-old writing for Rolling Stone magazine and eventually ended up writing, directing, and acting in movies. His poignant writing style reflects the nostalgia and humor of an era, with bits of pop culture and musical history and trivia woven in. This has proven to be a highly successful formula, as in the 1989 emo love story SAY ANYTHING, and the '90s grunge rocker hit SINGLES. Crowe's ALMOST FAMOUS is a semiautobiographical account that tells the story of a teen journalist, William Miller (Patrick Fugit), who goes on the road with an up-and-coming rock band called Stillwater. Though Miller's mentor, legendary rock critic Lester Bangs (portrayed with humor and heart by Philip Seymour Hoffman), cautions him not to befriend the musicians, Miller takes it a step further and befriends both the band and the Band-Aids--the girls who hang around with the band because they love the music. Miller is in for a wild ride around the country, to thrilling concerts and debauched backyard parties, living the life many 15-year olds dream about. He discovers that beneath the glittery façade of rock stardom are sometimes bittersweet life lessons and mild doses of heartbreak. More impacting are the friendships he finds with his glamorous travel companions. Newcomer Fugit is the perfect William Miller: baby-faced, slightly gawky, and an awestruck observer. Kate Hudson sparkles as Penny Lane, the leader of the Band-Aids, and Frances McDormand delivers a stellar performance as Elaine, Miller's protective and mildly paranoid mother. In the tradition of SAY ANYTHING and JERRY MAGUIRE, Crowe's coming-of-age tale is intelligent, well-written, and memorable.

The extra footage makes love this film even more!

Created: 08/04/08
Many "Special Editions" of films are just repackages with deleted scenes that never belonged there in the first place. Almost Famous,The Bootleg Edition is different. The nearly 30 minutes of extra footage furthers the story
of William Miller and Penny Lane. There are other great deleted scenes including a birthday party for Penny Lane and a funny interview scene involving a stoned out
Kyle Gass (Tenacious D). The added footage fleshes out the whole film nicely and should have been in the theatrical release. Other gooies include a Nancy Wilson
song video including video home movies from the film and an interview with the real life Lester Bangs editor of Cream. Plus Cameron Crowe's favorite albums of 1973. If you love the film, you need this DVD.

What a great movie, and a better DVD set!

I am a big fan of Almost Famous, the semi-autobiographical movie by director Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Say Anything). In fact, I think it is by far his best movie to date.

The movie follows William on the road as he reports on Stillwater, an up and coming rock and roll band. The catch here is that William's still in high school, and he's learning about a lot of things his mother would rather see him not. (In fact, she's so "square" that she thinks Simon and Garfunkel are really out there!) Aside from all the great scenes, including the tour bus collectively singing Elton John's "Tiny Dancer", the great thing about this set in particular is the extra discs. One is a CD of Stillwater's songs from the movie, and the second is a disc that includes commentary by Cameron Crowe and his mom. I love the dialogue these two have together...in fact, Crowe included several family "heirlooms" including wall hangings and clothing from his own childhood. When he and his mom point out these things and discuss them, it's a delight. I almost enjoy watching it more than the original theatrical version!

This is a must for any rock fan, and any fan of new movie classics. I put this in my top twenty all-time favorite movies.

Insightful look into the lives of rock stars!

Created: 15/04/08
Super sharp extra deluxe edition of a really great movie. Just caught it recently and wondered why I haven't seen it up till now. There are some great scenes with the rock icons of our time relating to a 16 year old and constantly asking the kid for life advice. The band members are chilren being led around by a really smart insightful kid. Not a family movie yet very touching. Also, if you have to own this movie make sure you get this loaded version and not the lame 1 disc set. This is a 2 DVD set with a CD also, what a bargain. Cameron Crowe rocks!

Almost Famous Untitled bootleg Cut DVD

Created: 24/01/11
I have always been a huge fan of the original theatrical cut, but this takes the movie to a whole new level. With over 39 minutes of never before seen footage you get to know the characters on a much deeper level. I personally think this is the way the movie should have always been. In this form it is truly a Cameron Crowe masterpiece. Other reviews I have read say that the extended footage was just a way for Crowe to interject his corny humor...I do not believe this and find the humor refreshing and interesting. The bottom line is if you love this movie or have never seen it this item is a must have. Rock On

Almost Famous: Bootleg Cut

Created: 04/04/07
This copy had recently gone OOP so I bought it in near mint condition. The OOP status stems from the fact that in addition to the extended cut of the film (Crowe's cut) there is a bonus CD of songs from the fictional group in teh film, Stillwater. Apparently due to licensing issues, that CD has been ordered off the market so that's why the set is very hard to find. The CD itself is alright, if you like the live performances from the film, you'll like the CD. There's only about 5 tracks on there, so not a whole lot.

The real treat is the extended cut of the film which has about 45 minutes of cut footage in it that Crowe put back in. If you're a fan of the film, it's great to have and there are some real gems in the new footage.
