Amelie (DVD, 2002, 2-Disc Set, Special Edition)

Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Audrey Tautou, Mathieu Kassovitz|Theatrical release: 2001|Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Amélie Poulain (Audrey Tautou) is a young woman who glides through the streets of Paris as quietly as a mouse. With wide eyes and a tiny grin, she sees the world in a magical light, discovering minor miracles every day. A shy and reserved person whose favorite moments are spent alone skimming stones into the water, Amélie was raised by a pair of eccentrics who falsely diagnosed her with a heart problem at the age of six and so limited her exposure to the outside world. Now a free and independent woman, Amélie wears a bob that curls in every direction and dresses in red. With a job in a café and an aptitude for spying on her neighbors, Amélie entertains herself by enacting a series of homemade, kindhearted practical jokes. She returns a long-forgotten box of childhood knickknacks to its proper owner, she sends her father's garden troll on a trip around the world, and she creates a love connection at the café between the hypochondriac druggist and a beer-drinking old grouch. But when the day is done, Amélie finds one stone unturned, and decides to work her magic on the quirky object of her affections, Nino Quincampoix (Matthieu Kassovitz), whom she has never met.Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (who codirected DELICATESSEN and THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN with Marc Caro) presents AMÉLIE, an aesthetically gorgeous and inventive film. The rich, glowing color scheme is offset by flashbacks in black and white archival footage that give short biographies of each character. A soft-spoken narrator guides viewers through this enlightening fairy tale, which sometimes speeds through the streets and other times drifts in slow motion. AMÉLIE is humorous, questioning, and strange, and it will change the lives of all who watch it, if only for a short while after leaving Amélie's world.

Amelie is a charming film.

Created: 04/12/06
You have to like foreign films with subtitles or speak french for this one. It is a great movie. Amelie finds a hidden treasure and sets out to find its old owner. After her success with the long lost treasure, she decides that she wants to do good deeds. to help those around her and possibly herself. She also extracts a little revenge on an overly cruel shop keeper. In the process, she reconnects people, changes lives and finds love.

Utterly Charming Movie I Can't Wait to See Again!

Created: 31/01/08
I first heard of Amelie from Meghan in her Stitch It knitting podcast. She highly recommends the movie and has seen it numerous times. Now I'm addicted.

A highly imaginative introvert sets out to bring more joy to the lives of those around her, choosing quirky circuitous stratagems to accomplish her secret goals. The movie is in French with English subtitles, but you forget that within minutes because the story is so involving.

If you like the kind of movie you think about for the next day or more, with a cute and charming lead character and a bit of romance, this one's for you. Now excuse me, I'm going to go watch it again right now!

Enchanting!!!

There is nothing I disliked about the movie. It's perfection pictured on the screen. I can't describe why. Everything is a piece that contributes to make the movie one of the best in French if not World cinematography. Audrey Tautou is endearing as the lone and good-hearted Amélie, as well as Mathieu Kassowitz as the day dreamer guy. There is magic in the air, but everything is subtle. The special effects are like a cherry on the top of the cake. A modern fairy tale story that makes us feel light hearted and wonder what we have been doing to let the simplest things in life pass unnoticed. What more could you expect from a movie in addition to leaving you a good feeling in a very european way? Reality? That one we get in the every-day life. Amélie is superb!!!

I decided to buy this DVD because I have rented it to watch so many times that I could have paid for it twice. I like the lighthearted plot of the movie. We should all be more like Amelie. It may be considered a chick movie but the guys won't mind looking at Audrey Tatou. She is cute and funny. She desperately tries to make others happy. This may be where "random acts of kindness" was birthed. I love the garden gnome's adventures and the sly way she got her Dad out of the house. I expect to enjoy this movie over and aver...so much to see and take in. I catch something new every time I watch it.

Everything about this movie is charm. Capturing the true delight of Paris and all things French. This film doesn't leave one stone unturned, and dazzles with all its little intricacies. As fine a film as any, and you wont know what I mean till you watch it. I've watched it more than a dozen times, when I'm in the mood for a little trip to Paris.

Blessings, Max Rainet.
