A magnificent and beautiful book!

Created: 05/12/08
"America Wide" is a book of photographs of United States scenery which succeeds where many others of its type fail by trying to be too "arty." All of the vistas in the book are artistic and beautiful -- sometimes in a cozy, picnic-basket kind of way, sometimes with all the powerful majesty of Nature.

Many photograph books put in pictures that are of dubious value -- a skyline with a single tree and a blue sky behind it, or a close-up of a dozen pebbles. Photos like that basically have no character -- you can see that anywhere, and anyone could take pictures like that. They might as well have left the page blank.

America Wide, however, has only one or two 'flops' among its hundreds of scenes. A wide variety of scenic pictures are included. A few of the photos have man-made structures in them, but these are picturesque houses and a covered bridge -- the only real 'flop' in this regard is a photo with a rusting pickup truck in the foreground. For the most part, the photos are well-chosen views of pure scenery.

I bought this book as a gift for a European friend who was curious about what the U.S. looked like outside the cities. However, upon seeing it, I'm also planning to buy a copy for myself. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys pictures of beautiful scenery without having to wade through a lot of 'arty' views of two grass blades or a handful of pebbles with a feather stuck in them.

I bought this book because my mom was really wanting more books by this photographer. She had bought one at a garage sale and loved it. It has great pictures that and quotes that go with them. If anyone likes photography books then you would enjoy this one.
