Movie synopsis

In the aftermath of a job gone awry, an American hitman retreats to the Italian countryside, where he befriends a local priest and strikes up an unexpected romance while awaiting the details of his next assignment. Jack (George Clooney) is lucky to be alive after his Swedish assignment went sour, and he knows that it's only a matter of time before his luck runs out. Not eager to tempt fate again, Jack arrives in a small Italian town and takes a job assembling a weapon for the mysterious Mathilde (Thekla Reuten). During this uncharacteristically peaceful interlude, Jack befriends kindly clergyman Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli), and connects with pretty local Clara (Violante Placido). But in the process of reaching out for a little human contact, Jack is making himself more vulnerable than ever. THE AMERICAN was adapted for the screen from the novel A VERY PRIVATE GENTLEMAN by author Martin Booth.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

4 stars out of 4 -- "Every performance is tightly controlled. Clooney is in complete command of his effect."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (08/31/2010)

"[A] slow-burning thriller....THE AMERICAN's muted pleasures rest heavily on the sustained air of mystery around Clooney, and Corbijn, a pristine stylist, keeps the atmosphere nice and thick." -- Grade: B
A.V. Club - Scott Tobias (09/01/2010)

"[I]t's a very different, more removed Clooney than audiences are used to seeing....It's a much more interior performance than usual, a dark, withdrawn role that completely avoids the actors' usual high-wattage smile..."
Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan (09/01/2010)

"[An] elegantly crafted existential thriller....[Clooney] keeps you attentive, and the drama's seriousness finally earns your respect."
Wall Street Journal (09/03/2010)

"Dutch director Anton Corbijn, working from a script by Rowan Joffe, holds his film to a steady, often glacial pace....A film of startling austerity."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (09/02/2010)

3 stars out of 4 -- "The film has a contemplative allure, unfolding at a deliberate pace....Clooney plays the enigmatic title character with mature confidence."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (09/01/2010)

"[A] contemplative thriller....Watching Clooney wander toward his character's lost self is one of the great pleasures of the movie."
Movieline - Stephanie Zacharek (08/31/2010)

3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] stylish throwback to the existential crime thrillers of the '70s."
Total Film - Neil Smith (10/22/2010)

5 stars out of 5 -- "[Corbijn] takes the thriller genre and -- far from proving a safe pair of hands -- elevates it to the level of poetry."
Uncut - Chris Roberts (12/01/2010)

"[A]dmirable for its defiance and acidity....It's mature, fastidiously logical with exposition, and patient..."
Sight and Sound - Michael Atkinson (12/01/2010)

3 stars out of 5 -- "Corbijn enjoys silence and master shots -- the slow-build over the whizz-bang. There are some terrific scenes..."
Empire - Nev Pierce (11/24/2010)

Included in Roger Ebert's "The Best Films of 2010" -- "The film sees dispassionately, guards its secrets, and ends like a clockwork mechanism arriving at its final, clarifying tick."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (12/16/2010)

"Much of the film's expressive currency is committed to procedural patience, in the tradition of Jean-Pierre Melville's stoic studies of underworld industry."

'The American' did what 'The Tourist' couldn't

 | Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

'The American' is truly one of the best films of 2010. A deliberately paced, methodical thriller about a man who is good at what he does, but doesn't want to do it anymore. Full of wonderful performances and beautiful cinematography, it may not be for everyone, but I'm sure many viewers will love it. Universal's Blu-ray release is more clear-cut. Its proficient video transfer is striking and rewarding, its faithful DTS-HD Master Audio track is invigorating and immersive, and its simple but satisfying supplemental package will sustain fans of the film. Overall, this one comes highly recommended.

Never trust the quotes on the DVD covers "Gripping" says Roger Ebert "A Labyrinth of Seduction, Secrets and Suspense!" claims some guy from Fox TV. "Slow moving, Plodding and Uneventful" whoops Zipomatic! oh wait, that last one actually seems pretty good... yeah, trust that last guy.

Look at all of the pictures on the box art of George Clooney holding a gun! Wow! This must be a non stop thrill ride, right? um... no. Clooney is an assassin who hides out in Italy after some bad guys track him down in Sweden. While he is there he makes a gun for a client.... and that's about it. He visits lots of pretty places, he finds a prostitute who he likes, he also chats with a priest on occasions. I say he does this, but what he mainly does is walk around slowly and says nothing for good chunks of the movie, I guess that builds up the "suspense" and then when he does talk to people, the dialogue is very short and swift. They get right to the point, because they are all business these assassin types.

So will the bad guys find him? Is Clooney a bad guy himself? Who can he trust? Do you really care after 100 minutes of watching Clooney doing very little? (albeit dramatically) I know I didn't.

Find something else to do for 2 hours!

Created: 15/02/11
Despite the fabulous George Clooney, who is great to look at all by himself, and the beautiful Italian scenery this movie does not offer much in the way of entertainment. The dialogue is sparse, the plot barely there and there is very little character development. I found myself drifting off to sleep several times, only to shake myself awake in the hope that the action or thrills would start at any moment. Unfortunately, that hope was dashed. What the film did offer was a shot of full frontal nudity, lots of scenes of Clooney walking up and down stairs around his apartment, and plenty of driving scenes. The opening scene had my hopes up that this would indeed be an action-thriller worth its salt, but what I received was a sparsely seasoned tour of small-towns outside of Rome. If you love cinematography, or even just looking at George, then this movie is for you. If you want heart-pounding thrills, a plot or a sense of satisfaction at spending two hours watching a movie...keep looking.

An assassin who becomes the target

Created: 12/03/11
This film is slow-moving and somewhat dull as it lags in many places. The American is definitely not something that will appeal to the average viewer.
Clooney has made many good films in his career, but this is not one of his most memorable movies.
