With this album, Waters touches heavily on the dangers of capitalism, the insensitivity of the human race, the ridiculousness of war, and the onslaught of mindless entertainment that encroaches on mankind on a day-to-day basis. Fitting all these aspects into 14 songs is a task in itself, but accomplishing this task alongside music that is forceful and appealing is extremely difficult, and still Waters succeeds in doing this throughout the duration of the album. "The Ballad of Bill Hubbard" is a moving spoken intro from Alf Razzell, a former member of Britain's Royal Fusiliers. A stab at the false sense of security that lies within religion is dealt with on the powerful "What God Wants, Pt. 1," and the cowardice of the world's leaders is addressed in "The Bravery of Being Out of Range," one of the albums most blatant tracks. Guest guitarist Jeff Beck rises to the occasion on a number of songs here, and both Rita Coolidge and Don Henley fill in behind and beside Waters on a couple of the longer tunes. Ending with the title track, a song that sums up the whole of the album with it's subtle yet hard-hitting demeanor, Waters proves that he can still reveal his conceptual ideas with pristine clarity, only on Amused to Death, the music is as equally entertaining and effective. ~ Mike DeGagne

    Editorial Reviews
..Roger Waters' 14-track rumination on some of our choicest social ills scores some serious points...Not all the tracks strike their targets cleanly, but those that do give this record unusual depth.. - Rating: A-

    Water's Best

    Created: 24/10/06
"Amused to Death" is a concept album explaining, what Roger Waters of Pink Floyd believes to be, the decline of the human race. It's Roger's voice on everything going on at the time it was written, from TV to the cold war. Jeff Beck plays impressive guitar on all the tracks. This, however, is not an album for the politically correct or conservative. This album is very opinionated, and not for the particuraly religious either.

"The Ballad of Bill Hubbard" is an impressive guitar instrumental. It tells the story of a WW1 vet and how he left a man in Russia, or "no-man's land". "What God Wants, Part I" is a stomach-churner for the religious, naming many contradictions of what God wants like "God wants goodness, god wants light/God wants mayhem, god wants a clean fight". It explains how humans manipulate "what god wants" to push their own personal agendas. It is also one of the harder songs on the album, and resembles arena-rock.

It moves on rather suddenly to "Perfect Sense" Parts 1&2, telling the story of the monkey, who is a metaphor for the human race. Part 1 is a moving piano piece, that explains the monkey's move from common sense and peace to greed and violence. Part 2 pronounces "the global anthem", "Can't you see?/It all makes perfect sense/expressed in dollars and cents/pounds, shillings, and pence". And
the song does indeed become an overture for the rest of the album.

The hardest song on the album, "The Bravery of Being Out of Range" is yet another anthem, explaining how Roger thinks the US mishandled the Gulf War by using bombs, and how the US led an unfair war. The highlight, though, is the music and guitar. It stands out on the album as the best actual rock song, with "What God Wants" a close second.

The next pair of songs, "Late Home Tonight" parts 1&2 has a more cynical and his signature "bleeding-heart" approach. It explains how he thinks war has become entertainment, and that the media and TV portray it mainly to get ratings. The next song, "Too Much Rope" is a reiteration of the message in "Late Home Tonight", with a better overall tune and rhythm.

It then goes back to "What God Wants, Part 2", which is more of a reprise of Part 1, but a lot more examples. It is overall very powerful in its message. Part 3 of this song follows right after. It goes on about the metaphor of "the monkey", explaining how at this stage the monkey is totally desensitized. Musically it is probably the most mediocre song on the album, which means it is still a great song. "Watching TV" is an eerie song that sounds like Bob Dylan, a man reminiscing about his "yellow rose", who died in the Tianamen Square massacre. It ends with a the message that people only care about a person dying if it is on TV.

"Three Wishes" continues the eerie trend. It explains a encounter with a geenie, who grants three wishes to a man, then the man regrets them later. It is a standout progressive song on the album. The eeriest song is the next one, "It's a Miracle". It explains a world where the entire world is westernized, and paints a depressing and hopeless scheme. The final song, "Amused to Death", has an almost hopeful beginning, and it sums up the overall message of the album: this species has amused itself to death.

If you listen to this album with an open mind, it is a great album. Whether you agree with the messages in it, it proves itself as well musically as lyrically.

    What God Wants

    Created: 19/10/07
Is this a call for a noninterventionist foreign policy. Is this a call for an end to war as a solution to everything? Is this begging for the human race to wake up and realize that we're completely on the wrong track? Is this a slap in the face to the propaganda god machine? Is this a speech from Ron Paul? Roger Waters takes it all on in his unique brilliant way and gets the powerful message across. More people need to give this a good listen. 5 Huge Stars.
