Movie synopsis

What happens when the worlds of the Mafia and psychiatry collide? This outrageous farce answers that question, as mob boss Paul Vitti (Robert De Niro) and psychiatrist Ben Sobol (Billy Crystal) are forced to work together. When a prominent leader of the New York Mafia suddenly starts having panic attacks, he enlists the help of a New York psychiatrist for a fast cure. The two men suddenly find themselves struggling to understand each other's professional and private lives as they battle the FBI and the impending threat of a Mafia takeover, not to mention an irritable fiancée (Lisa Kudrow) eager to get married.

Total Film - Dan Jolin (10/01/1999)

Analyze This--a hilarious comedy

Created: 09/12/07
I thoroughly enjoyed this film! Directed by the talented Harold Ramis (remember him from Second City TV?), the film stars Billy Crystal and Robert De Niro. Crystal plays psychiatrist Dr.Ben Sobel, and De Niro plays gangster Paul Vitti who demands Sobel's help to prevent panic attacks. Another reviewer mentioned the frequent use of profanity, which I personally did not find offensive, but because of the language this is definitely not a family film. The outtakes are very funny and makes you wonder how this crew was able to complete filming!
I tend to watch my favorite films over and over again, and I've seen this one five times.

You won't need your head examined after seeing this

This movie is great. De Niro is very convincing as a mobster and Crystal plays a very convincing divorced psychiatrist who gets entangled into helping this mobster overcome panic attacks - when all the doc wants to do is get married and have a nice private practice. However, his involvement with the mob can help him as he struggles with the success of his father.

The film is very funny and if you can get past the foul language it is full of humor and a good story that moves at a good pace.

The bonus material, including gag reel, was great.

De Niro is half-hearted, Crystal gives the same schtick

Created: 01/12/07
A likable movie with a good storyline. De Niro seems to be giving it about 50%, just playing along with his character. It is mindless and shallow work for him. Billy Crystal gives a good performance as the shrink. I didn't get the son, or the girlfriend (Lisa Kudrow) - who is a polar opposite match to Mr. Crystal. There was no chemistry between them. The props and gags were way overdone. Still there are some cute scenes and a few laughs to be had.

Deniro in a rare and classic comedic performance!

Created: 04/01/08
As a huge fan of mob movies, in particular those that star Deniro, it was fun to see a faithful send-up of the genre with a genuinely good premise and great acting.
Deniro has done some real doozies in the past decade or so, but he always shines in anything mob-like. His last quasi-comedic performance was in "Jackie Brown" but he basically mumbled through the entire event. That leaves one of his best, memorable comedic performance as "The King of Comedy", circa 1980 until "Analyze This", a close second.
The supporting cast his hilarious too, Crystal, Palmentieri (also always great in Mob roles ) and the guy who plays "Jelly" - all spot on. In addition, all of the cameos (many who are familiar faces in dramatic mob movies) appear to revel in their roles.

Just plain, mob-by fun!

I got from the library while waiting on this to come!

I bought it because I know that Robert Dinero is a very talented actor and always makes watching a movie fun, exciting and captivating.
I watched this movie by getting it from the library while still waiting on my purchase bc of the holidays and it was hilarious.
Billy Crystal made everything so much better in his position because when he and Deniro work together everything these two men work on becomes magic!
