And Now for Something Completely Different (DVD, 1999, Subtitled French)

Movie synopsis

Monty Python is actually a comedy troupe consisting of British actors Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and American Terry Gilliam (BRAZIL, 12 MONKEYS). The troupe evolved from the Cambridge Footlight Society, a theatrical comedy troupe at Cambridge University. The collective was groundbreaking both in terms of its offbeat acting styles and radical approach to the most controversial subjects of the time, among them sex, politics, and race. Most of the Pythons have gone on to successful careers in entertainment, writing, acting, directing, and more.AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT consists of some of Monty Python's funniest sketches from their earliest years together. Director Ian MacNaughton leads John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Terry Gilliam on a hysterical romp through familiar Python locales. This includes pet shops; marriage counselor offices; odd London streets; upper-class twits; old ladies on motorcycles, fighting off milkmen; bank robbers; crazy flashers; dirty forks; and killer jokes. The sketches have been re-created for the big screen, without the ever-present laugh track, but are still loaded with Gilliam's outrageously funny surreal animation. (Gilliam went through a plethora of different career paths before becoming a director, and at one point was working as an illustrator in a Los Angeles advertising agency.) As in the television show, the skits are linked together through clever animation as well as by characters in uniform (Graham Chapman, in this case) proclaiming, "I'm warning this film not to get silly again." Among Monty Python's favorite targets are the military, the police, the British government, the courts, Mao, Uncle Sam, and television reporters. As always, there are lots of men in drag. Even the closing credits are a riot. But watch out for that 16-ton weight! AND NOW… is a perfect introduction for the viewer who is new to Monty Python's unpredictable comic stylings and brilliant wit in performance.

Stunning compilation of MPFC's Best Sketches

Created: 04/02/08
And Now for Something Completely Different (released on DVD in 1999)was originally released theatrically to broaden the audience for the cutting edge sketch work of the Monty Python's Flying Circus TV series then in production with the BBC. Taking the best sketches, including Spam, Wink Wink, the lumber jack's song, The Upper Class Twit of the Year Race, The University of Walamzoo Philosophy Department and many other great sketches, MPFC polished the edges and used enhanced production values for this theatrical release. An absolute must have for the Python fan's library.

Python's Greatest Hits

Created: 06/07/06
This is a great film for fans of Monty Python's Flying Circus. It is a collection of top notch skits from the famous British TV show of the late 60's and early seventies, put into a film format.

Of course, the cinematography and sound are much better with a film than you would get by purchasing the original TV shows. In addition, this collection does not contain anything but first rate material so you don't have to sort through a bunch of stuff to find the real gems. I beg the pardon of those who think that everything that Python did was a gem.

The only criticism I have is that since these sketches are repeats from the show they do not always have the spark of originality and enthusiasm in many cases that they possess in the original TV versions. Similar to a band playing "Stairway to Heaven" for the thousandth time on tour we get some of that same vibe from Python in this film.

I highly recommend this film to folks looking to discover "Monty Python" and what they are all about. Long time fans don't need my help.

something familiar but still different

Created: 06/02/08
This is the Python's first cinema attempt and featured classic bits from the tv show 'flying circus'. It features such routines as 'the parrot sketch', 'underclass twit of the year' and the drunken sing along 'lumberjack' but sadly no cheese shop. Still each member of the group gets their own chances to shines (including Gilliam's great animation) so that all fans of certain pythons will be highly entertained.

Whether you are new to the MP experience or one of their many completists this is an excellent DVD although I would have loved to see a trailer or some better special features.

LOL :-)

This is a greatest of or greatest hits if you choose. If you, like I, are old enough to recall Monty Python when they 1st hit the screen, then you will enjoy the walk down memory lane. If you are new to them, then this an excellent DVD to get to know them with! The jokes, gags, skits, are as fresh today as they were when they 1st did them. And MP has been around for over 20, pushing 30 years! Get the popcorn, put your feet up and prepare to LOL at some the best of best of the great MP! :-) !

You cannot put a limited rating on Monty Python, if there was anything beyond a excellent rating, it would be infinite, the remake of the skits in this was for the full length feature film of this movie, but the orignal skit are also hilarious. You will enjoy, loads of fun, grannie gangs, and dead birds.
