Dan Brown's Angels and Demons is a fast-paced detective drama that combines science, art, religion, and murder.
Harvard symbology professor Robert Langdon is the protagonist who finds himself at a Swiss nuclear research facility. It seems a scientist has been murdered and the infamous Illuminati society is somehow involved. Some antimatter has been taken, and Langdon joins the scientist's daughter, Vittoria, on a mad dash through some of Rome's most famous landmarks, in an effort to find it before the Vatican is leveled.
I liked the plot of Angels and Demons and found much of middle section wonderfully absorbing and tense, as Robert and Vittoria decipher ancient clues and race from place to place in Rome, fast on the heels of a murderer. The beginning of the book, which discusses antimatter, was slow-going for me and the conclusion is way over the top in terms of realism. The timeline was a major stumbling block: Being able to travel great distances across Rome in minutes (even seconds) took away some credibility for me.
In spite of the weaknesses, Angels and Demons is very exciting and at times, even spine-tingling. If you have been to Rome, you will enjoy revisiting the city in this book. You'll also learn about the inner workings of the Vatican, and about the Illuminati, which I found fascinating. This is also my favorite of Dan Brown's Collection.

Riveting and Suspenseful ... Very Highly Recommended!

I was introduced to Dan Brown through the mesmerizing THE DA VINCI CODE. I loved it and decided to read his previous works and I just finished reading ANGELS AND DEMONS. Brown's writing is extremely captivating and informative. You will find it hard to put this book down before reading the very last page of it.
If you like religious thrillers, I highly recommend you read this book. Similar to The Da Vinci Code, this book deals with a secret brotherhood, religion, mad authoritative figures, dark assassin, and of course, Robert Langdon, Harvard's fictional professor of Religious Symbology (and one of my favorite characters.)
I have learned a whole lot about the Vatican and numerous other things from Brown's impressive and extensive research with which this book is rife. There is plenty of information in this book it will definitely satisfy your need for knowledge in both science and religion.
In a nutshell, Angels and Demons is another well-researched, intensely-entertaining and highly-riveting religious thriller written by one outstanding author. Do yourself a favor and read this book. Do it for the religious spirit in you; do it for the skeptical one as well.

Better than The Da Vinci Code!
Created: 05/09/06
I read The Da Vinci Code because of all of the attention it was getting. I truly enjoyed that book and went on to read Dan Brown's other books.
Angels & Demons was the 2nd book by Dan Brown that I read and I found the book to be far more interesting, with better character development, more descriptive text and more suspense.
The story is wildly creative and the use of ambigrams (words that appear the same whether read right-side-up or up-side-down), the Illuminati (an ancient secret society), the conclave (the Catholic process of selecting a new Pope), humanity (including members of clergy) at it's best and worst, all added something that can only be described as superbly imaginative.
Say what you will about the "clatter" surrounding The Da Vinci Code, but this book was captivating to the point that even that which would seem almost impossible was easily accepted as possible. The characters in this novel, including Langdon from The Da Vinci Code, were deep and complex with inner-demons that they faced whilst facing the true demons of the real world.
The Da Vinci Code was good, but this novel was phenomenal; absolutely perfect. I would give it a 6/5 (6 out of 5) if it made sense to do so.

Better Than The Da Vinci Code
Created: 10/07/06
This novel preceded Dan Brown's popular The Da Vinci Code and it just may be a better novel. From the opening chapter when Robert Langdon receives a fax of a corpse that has been brutally murdered and branded to the breathtaking, stunning and complete surprise at the end, this novel is a non-stop thriller.
I highly recommend the illustrated version of the book. It dramatically depicts the brands that are employed in each of the murders. I was so fascinated with the novel and its underlying story that I undertook the research to learn more about the novel and its background.
One of the truly amazing things I uncovered is that Robert Langdon is actually the last name of John Langdon - the man who created the word art known as Ambigrams that are shown in the illustrated version. An ambigram means you will be able to read the word both right side up and upside down.
For you futuristic thinkers and dreamers there is the HSCT (High Speed Civil Transport) with its 20:1 thrust/weight ratio that flies Langdon from Boston, MA to Geneva in an hour. This aircraft is capable of flying at altitudes of 100 miles and speeds of 11,000 miles per hour.
But that is just the beginning for next comes the Particle Accelerator, a machine that propels two particles in opposite directions through a circular tube until they crash into each other with the resultant crash dividing the particles into their most basic element - pure energy.
Certainly this novel is similar to The Davinci Code in that it pits the church against science. The result is suspenseful, exciting, full of mystery, enough truth to make one think about the possibilities and a very surprising conclusion.
I highly recommend this novel.

Angels & Demons...The Long & Short of It...Mostly Long!
Created: 05/02/09
Finally the book has ended! Don't get me wrong, I am an avid reader and love a good book and story, but this book dragged on beyond all decency. Just when I thought it should be ending(make it stop..please make it stop!), there was 5,000 more pages to read (I'm in hell)! Unfortunately, before I knew I was reading the neverending story, I was past the point of no return and could not throw the book in a dark corner; I had to finish reading it. I saw the movie, "The Da Vinci Code", and enjoyed it so I decided to read its prequel (mistake). The story itself was not bad. It was full of intrigue, twists (most of which I figured out prior to it being revealed) and interesting historical information. The main character however, had a few moron moments similar to those wonderful horror movies where the person being chased ALWAYS falls or trips. Some of the plot was fantastical and unrealistic, but then it is a fiction. The author creatively spotlights the age-old struggle and conflict between religion and science; Creation vs. the Big Bang Theory in a dynamic, thrilling race against time jammed pack with murder, mayhem and madness! Despite the sensational plot, the book lacked that "page-turning, can't put it down" quality. After awhile, I just wanted to get to the end and finish it. My final 2 cents...instead of wasting days of your life like I did reading this mind-numbingly long book, wait for the movie to come out June 2009.
