Timeless, chaste romance
Created: 11/06/09
With or without music, the based-on-a-true-story of Anna and the King of Siam (Thailand) remains a timeless romance. There is mutual respect and even love between the King and his children's tutor, even though they come from different cultures. In real life, not every attraction ends with sex or even a kiss; this may be a bit unsatisfying for the viewer, but it's realistic. Sometimes, love DOESN'T conquer all. Maybe it's the wrong time, the wrong place...or the guy already has twelve wives! Yul Brynner is a tough act to follow, since his performance defines King Mongkut as indelibly as Leonard Nimoy defines Spock. Wisely, Chow Yun-Fat doesn't shave his head or otherwise attempt to imitate Brynner. Once you get past the idea of a King with hair, Yun-Fat's King is every bit as noble --- and hot!---as Brynner's, but with his own unique style. Foster is an intelligent and courageous Anna. The scenery is breathtaking. Definitely a film to watch, if only to compare it to The King & I and judge for yourself which version is best.

This is one of those movies that is interesting and fast paced from beginning to end. Never lags and keeps you guessing, even though its an old story. I'm a fan of Jodi Foster, she is always top notch. Watch it in wide screen... the views are like moving paintings. The final statement by the boy king is... absolutely dynamic and romantic for these star crossed lovers. WATCH it as soon as possible. MR

Nothing to dislike. Chow Yun-Fat and Jodie Foster portrayed very well the respect the two characters have for each other while maintaining their dignity.

It feels like you are transported into a different world, the characters are flawless, the landscapes and backgrounds are alive, the costumes, art direction are detailed and colorful. Jodie Foster delivers excellent performance as usual. The Orient comes alive with its beauty and pageantry!

Anna and the King

Wonderful remake of The King and I. Jodie Foster brings her own touch to Anna and adds depth to a good movie. It keeps the best of the original and adds more. I decided to buy it because it is worth watching more than once!
