Movie synopsis

IN THEATERS 1/27/2006James Franco stars as a down-at-the-heel kid who enters Annapolis on a boxing scholarship, where he learns important lessons about love, work, and friendship., Working-class tough guy Jake Huard (James Franco) gets a chance to make good when he's accepted into the famed Annapolis Naval Academy, but his buddies and dad back at the shipyard doubt he'll last a month. The film moves through his first year at the academy, culminating in the big boxing tournament, which is Huard's chance to get revenge against his stoic-beyond-the-call-of-duty senior officer, Cole (Tyrese Gibson). First, though, the closed-off Huard must learn to ask for help, which arrives via a warmly attractive senior officer played by Jordanna Brewster (THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS). ANNAPOLIS's director, Justin Lin (BETTER LUCK TOMORROW) brings an unpretentious visual approach to this film; he lets the story flow straight as an arrow, sweeping viewers up into the daunting rigors and the developing camaraderie of this challenging environment. A muscular orchestral score by Brian Tyler pushes everything along with maximum heart and impact, and the rich cinematography creates an invigorating sense of you-are-there closeness which, by the time the story gets to the climactic fight, is breathlessly intense. The standout performance is Gibson's--so composed and elegantly tough, he's like a coiled spring. Brewster is also good, lending a welcome contrast of feminine warmth to the sometimes cold world of military discipline. As an inspiring tale of rising up and beating your limitations, ANNAPOLIS makes the grade.

Consensus: In the immortal words of the Village People; 'In the Navy/ You can sail the seven seas/ In the Navy/ You can put your mind at ease.' However, if you're a movie critic, your mind was not put at ease by Annapolis; instead, you were probably felt uneasy because of the remarkable similarities between the plot of this mediocre, cliche-ridden drama and Top Gun and An Officer and a Gentleman.

Annapolis the movie plot line is full of holes

Created: 10/09/06
The movie,Annapolis, follows the path of the main character, Jake Huard, who is barely accepted to the highly prestigious military academy, Annapolis. I thought that this movie started off on the right foot with an action packed boxing scene. But that's just it, this movie's title has you belive otherwise. The plot development was sorely lacking in many respects. First off, it was more like a boxing movie, than a movie of how life at Annapolis is. The whole point of the movie has the main character, Jake Huard, wanting to beat up one of senior instructors in a boxing match. In fact, this whole movie focuses on this one point. It gets pretty old really fast. Also, what bothered me the most is that the movie never really explores what happened to his overweight roomate,"Arkansas" either. He just get kicked out, and we don't get an explanation as to what happened to him next. I mean, was he re-admitted to Annapolis?I was scratching my head when this movie was over, really wanting to know what happened to his roomate when he got the nerve to jump out of his window for not passing his physical test and being thrown out of school. Anyhow, this film is pretty one dimensional. I thought it was really predictable, I would pass on this movie and rent Taps, now that's a real movie about a military school.

Annapolis

I was fortunate to go to a screening before it was released in theaters and I left the theater loving what I had just seen. I love this movie becuase the story is very familar but at the same time nothing I had seen before. i really loved remember the titans and this really reminded me of that but at the same time is very different becuase it has nothing to do with football. what this is is a story about freshman or "plebes" at the US Naval Academy, particalary a young plebe played by james franco and follows him and his journey throughout his "freshman year"
i knew after i saw it in the theater i would get it on dvd and was glad i did

Rocky Meets Officer & A Gentleman

Created: 02/08/06
A very intense and gripping story of a local Annapolis, Maryland resident who through gritty determination and perseverance fulfills his dream of gaining a slot at the United States Naval Academy. The blue collar theme from amateur boxer to prospective United States Naval Officer was across between Officer and A Gentleman and the Rocky movies. The acting was very believable and crisp. You had a sense of what US Naval Academy cadets went through because of excellent technical advisors. As a whole this movie is definitely worth adding to youu dvd collection! Recommended!
