Along with good liner notes from Parke Puterbaugh, who interviewed James extensively (James himself contributes a slew of fun and informative anecdotes about many of the songs) and the usual skilled remastering job, it makes for one heck of a collection. James himself sums up his own appeal best of all: "We were really having fun, and you can hear it in the grooves." "Hanky Panky" understandably kicks things off, but the collection really doesn't take off until the just-plain-irresistible "I Think We're Alone Now," notably (and some would argue memorably) covered by Tiffany in the late '80s. The original is barely two minutes long, but packs in everything from a killer opening bassline and dramatic pauses to a totally killer chorus, James and company transforming Ritchie Cordell's song into a glistening gem. The fact that so many of his hits were beneficiaries of later remakes -- "Mony Mony" by Billy Idol, "Crimson and Clover" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, "Draggin' the Line" by R.E.M. -- is even better testimony to their appeal, and hearing the originals all in place confirms why they were smashes. If a number of selections are paler shadows of some of these greats, the arrangements are rarely less than anything but pure pop fun -- the almost delirious addition of swirling strings, flutes, and even harp to many songs gives them even more cheery flair. The fact that they were able to make woozy, psych-influenced delights like "Crimson and Clover" and still maintain their status as major hit artists on the charts is testament enough to their appeal. ~ Ned Raggett

ANTHOLOGY by TOMMY JAMES

Created: 02/12/10
firstly, RHINO always does quality audio. some songs may differ in quality in anthologies due to original versions chosen. this album is overall excellent.
In my opinion, their 2 best were CRIMSON AND CLOVER and CRYSTAL BLUE PERSUASION.
Both songs quintessential examples of the late 60's hippie/psychedelic era.
On this album both songs are the best in recording mix and audio fidelity.

Although Hanky Panky was their breakout hit for me it hasn't passed the test of time as a classic like some of the others. some of the lesser known ballads on this album are also noteworthy. reviewed by " the duke".

This CD is still the best collection available today.

Created: 30/06/10
This Rhino anthology, originally released on cassette tape in 1986, dates from 1989. However, since the original release, there has been no other greatest hits collection to equal it. It has every charted single in chronological order from earliest to latest. Also has a very informative booklet with info on each song. If you are a fan of Tommy James, this is the most complete volume of his work ever offered.

Anthology - Tommy James & The Shondells

Created: 05/10/06
I bought this CD for two reasons:

1) I attended their concert at the Iowa State Fair this summer.

2) I have very fond memories of "Crimson and Clover", "Mony Mony", "Draggin' the Line", etc.

This CD is brand new, and has nearly 30 songs! I remember about ten of the many hits on this CD. It was a very good value, and I listen to it severel times a week.

You will not be disappointed if you buy this. It's a keeper.

Tommy James forever

Created: 10/04/11
I was going to their concert and wanted to listen to all those great oldies again before going. The music was great on the CD and even better at the concert. He's still got it! This is music that will live forever.
