Product description

Synopsis
The aphorisms that make up the philosophy of war and strategy by Sun Tzu have, several centuries later, become a must-read for young professionals in business. Though the text can be applied to the ruthless world of commerce, this translation by Thomas Cleary contextualizes the teachings in the Taoist tradition, enabling the work to transcend the simple co-opting of the philosophy for business strategies. By clarifying the philosophical origins, Cleary makes the text applicable not only to winning a literal war but also to almost any conflict-resolution situation, as well as to achieving goals in life. Though the text deals with many pragmatic issues in war, ranging in topics from "Strategic Assessments, "Armed Struggle," and "The Use of Spies," much of the text is rooted in the idea that the greatest victory is won without having to do battle. At times, the material approaches these subjects in very practical terms, but the underlying message is that of surpassing unnecessary physical and emotional strain with deep understanding of the given situation. Because of the simplicity of the original text, there is much room for interpretation. The translation utilizes commentary from 11 ancient scholars elaborating on each aphorism with a more complete interpretation.

“A clever fighter is one who not only wins, but excels in winning with ease.” So wrote Sun Tzu 2,500 years ago, and kings, soldiers, and statesmen have been turning to the Chinese master for his astute observations ever since.

Sun Tzu’s incisive blueprint for battlefield strategy is as relevant to today’s combatants in business, politics, and everyday life as it once was to the warlords of ancient China. The Art of War is one of the most useful books ever written on leading with wisdom, an essential tool for modern corporate warriors battling to gain the advantage in the boardroom and for anyone struggling to gain the upper hand in confrontations and competitions.

Here Lionel Giles’s famed 1910 translation, laced with commentary from illustrious Chinese experts, is brought up to date with relevant quotations from Western writers and thinkers. This new edition offers Sun Tzu’s timeless classic, both with and without annotation, making it more accessible to aspiring leaders and military strategists than ever before.

Dallas Galvin, a writer and journalist specializing in international affairs and the arts, has reported on military affairs in Latin America and Asia and produced documentaries for the NATO Alliance.

the art of war many books with this title not all good.

Created: 04/09/09
Before buying, I read the reviews on about 8 or so books and decided to look at the probable accuracy of the translation by the most qualified person from the oldest known text, using the most easy method to present the information. Note: few of the 8 had a clue of what they were doing or maybe just wanted to tell a story. Still there were a couple choices. I chose the one with the most pages and also with the best form of presentation. If you choose this one you will see what I mean.

FIRST;
Sun Tzu started out in the family armament business as Sun Wu and there is no evidence that he was literate. The Art of War was written after his death most likely by or for his children and based on what he was able to teach them. TODAY YOU WOULD CALL SUN TZU A CONSULTANT.

SECOND: There are at least a dozen books by this title. However, the actual Art of War text can be read in about 10 or less minutes.

THIRD: The original text such as it was copied, time after time, in Chinese, by Chinese, would have many artistic licenses taken by the Chinese and this has had 3000 years to add and subtract by the copy person. Chinese language that old was a very limited language and very difficult to interpret by someone that was not there at the time.

FOURTH: This particular book was written many years ago and the text presented here is in the language style of 19th century England and takes a little getting used to. You will need a very old Websters library size dictionary to get the correct meaning from time to time. The writer did take the time to do the research and make the presentation in a manner which the reader can easily visualize and will have confidence in the best possible accuracy.

FIFTH: I would assume that the readers of this book have some military and hunting experience and can easily predict that observations of military actions in the recent past will show that the best and most obvious educated choices were not made in all cases. If General Lee had access to this particular text he would have made it required reading for all of his officers and the Civil War might have gone very differently.

Written as a strategy for fighting battles but also serves as a handbook of sorts for people in leadership positions. Not everything is those book applies but there are several points made that can be relative to today's leaders.
