Sweet little computer

This is a bit tiny, which leads to hitting buttons at the bottom that take you off the page you are on to other pages, but other than that, it is ideal for a spare computer (my mother is using hers to allow her to be on a computer upstairs, while my Dad is on the main one downstairs). It has a strong wireless signal. It is plug and play, quite easy to use. I personally like the next size up for everyday use, but this one is ideal for travel or tucking away easily...

Business Application

I wanted to ditch my 8-9 pound laptop in favor of something lightweight and cheap. No hassle through the airports, easy to access e-mail and web (like eBay!) from the hotel, and usable for my training classes.
The Asus Eee PC 2G meets these conditions, but was hard to get there.
Because it has only 2gb of TOTAL memory, Windows and most Linux operating systems are out of the question. They will not fit! I removed the custom-designed Xandros provided by Asus because it was old and not my cup 'o tea. Tried several lightweight Ubuntu distributions, but they all exceeded the memory capacity. Oh oh!
I finally managed to install a bare-bones Ubuntu, with XFCE windows, plus Firefox and OpenOffice. Everything works swell.
Unless you are a geek and looking for a challenge, keep the operating system that came with the machine!

Last year's netbook
Created: 04/02/10
So here's what I was after: a small, ultra-portable computer I could use for taking notes in class (i.e. a word processor--not really meant for gaming or other media), and one that would be cheap enough that I wouldn't feel too bad about tossing it into my Vespa storage compartment at the end of the day and driving the New Orleans' HORRIBLE streets (i.e. replaceable, if need be).
I REALLY wanted a netbook, and the Eee-PC has a very compact form (8.9", about 2 lbs), which I really liked. In that respect, it entirely lived up to my expectations. It runs a Linux OS (Eeebuntu), and I had never dealt with Linux before, so I didn't really have any expectations on that front. After a quick introduction to the philosophy & mode of operation Eeebuntu runs on, I was fine with that, too. The BIG downside, however, is that it doesn't even have enough memory to run the standard Eeebuntu netbook OS (Eeebuntu NBR) all on its own. I'm STILL stuck running it off of a memory stick, which kind of sucks. I think this is not so much a fault of the Eee PC, as it is reflective of how far netbooks have come just in the past year or so. As a point of reference, you can already get a Samsung or HP that has over 80x the memory.
The upshot? I was trying to find a smaller-that-average netbook for a bargain-basement price, and that's exactly what I got...in a year-old netbook that just wasn't built for today's standards. My Eee PC is serving its purpose for the moment (running it off the memory stick isn't that big of a deal, since I just e-mail myself my notese everyday before I shut it down), but I will probably upgrade to a new netbook by the time I start school next year, especially since this one put me out $150, and that's about the same price you can pay to get a new HP (if you also sign up for internet) from Verizon.
