DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT- STAY AWAY FROM THIS PHONE!

Created: 19/02/07
This phone has been a nightmare since day one. I have been with Verizon for four years and until this the service has been good. I like all the options they offer (pix, get-it-now, Vcast, etc) and the plans are reasonable. With previous phones the receptions was actually pretty damn good considering i live in a small town in the middle of nowhere MN. Then came the Audiovox CDM8910..

I thought it was something I did as that is what I was told by Verizon when I had to get it replaced last summer. It started its whole PMS-ing power problem just a few months after I got it and it went completely to hell very quickly. Being the broke college kid that I am I could not afford to get a whole new phone so Verizon conveniently offered me a discount on a refurbished model of the phone- minus the battery- for fifty bucks. How nice of them huh? NOT! On my way home from Verizon that evening, I decided to plug it into my car charger only to find that it didn't work with it. Thinking it was just the car charger- since it still worked (for the moment) with the wall charger, I ignored this and happily drove on with my "new" phone. To make matters worse, the battery turned out to be part of the problem too because even with "new" hardware, after charging my phone for days on end (not even kidding) it still wouldn't hold a charge and after being used for two minutes it would shut off. The odd thing was that once I turned the phone back on it would go back to saying it was fully charged -until I tried to use it again.
I resorted to having my charger with me at all times so that if I need to talk to somebody for longer than two minutes (at best) I would just plug it in while I talked. I figured it was a bearable fix to deal with untilI could get a new free phone under their "New Every Two" program. I thought the phone would at least make it through the eight months until I could get out of their ridiculous contract. Well the problem with always having to plug in my formerly wireless phone was that it also heats up rather quickly during talk time and when you add the A/C power source it becomes practically unbearable. To make matters worse, the phone would actually start electrically shocking my face/ear if I was talking on it for more than 45 minutes. Believe me, it hurt as it was more than just the average rubbing-your-feet-on-carpet static shock and it always managed to go directly to my eardrums. Not to mention that the power problems started to fry the software on the phone so that the screen would go blank at random and slow the response times for the buttons sucked. It was also notoriously dropping my call even when I would be driving in plain site of a radio tower. As of last week my phone permanently stopped being able to charge and the battery died completely. I still have four months left in my contract. This is the worst phone I have ever owned and Verizon has been of no help to the matter since they blame their customers for a defective product they once stood by.
I've run into people with the same model and they've all had similar complaints. When I get a chance to go to Verizon this week I plan on letting them know that they better well replace my phone free of charge for putting up with their crap on this phone. They cannot tell me it was something I did since after replacing it last August I have treated the thing with kid gloves and cannot recall dropping it a single time or exposing it to any extreme conditions. If they try to tell me t

There are better phones out there...

Created: 23/10/06
I've had this phone for over a year now, and just recently finally decided to give up on it and bite the bullet to upgrade to a new one (however costly that may be). Its reception is below average but not horrible, but I found it had a considerably larger amount of dropped calls than my previous phone, which was a fairly basic and primitive Nokia model phone. The camera on this phone might as well not even exist, as the pictures it takes are just plain horrible. The colors are terrible, the flash barely works at all (you have to time it JUST right), and it's pretty much worthless. The ringtone variety Verizon gives you is pretty good, so I can't complain there, and the sound quality on this phone is not bad, but worse than many comparable phones. Overall, I would NOT recommend this phone.

Audiovox 8910

This phone gets excellent digital reception. My husbands phone (Nokia) doesn't even compare. The only thing about it is if you get in a area without towers the battery will run down looking for signal. It constantly searches for signal. It also works for Analog systems, but the battery doesn't last as long. On a digital network it has a very long battery life. It is very durable. I have dropped this phone many times and it still works as good as the day I bought it. Great Phone.

My Husband Loves This Phone!!

Created: 11/02/09
I bought an 8910 for my husband almost 6 years ago, and he has aggressively resisted changing it out. It has the perfect balance of features and ease of use for a guy who is not techno-savvy. It is also very durable. After nearly 6 years of abuse (and he has thoroughly abused it!), it is worn, but works fine. He has worn off the writing on the buttons, so he was giddy when I found a brand new one (THANK YOU to the person who bought it, hated it, and stuffed it in the closet for a few years!!). My husband doesn't like the newer flip phones because they are flimsy. Anyway, it has been through almost 6 years of abuse and the only complaints are that the battery (original) holds little charge (about an hour), and that he can't read the buttons. He'd be only asking for a new battery if it weren't for the buttons.

My husband's abuse of the phone includes water, excessive dirt, grease, sand, and soot, regular & repeated dropping, including onto concrete from 15 feet, letting it freeze in winter multiple times, and being generally rough with it. Big strong hands and little phones usually don't mix, but this one can take it!

My observations for those looking to buy:

The camera is about right for keeping a couple of cute face shots of our kids at hand. This pics are "poor" quality, but not bad. They are plenty good for capturing a laugh and keeping the family close when traveling.

Texting is S-L-O-W. I don't know how he can stand it! I use a QWERTY phone & cannot stand to deal with texting on the 8910. But, hub says it's perfect for him because it takes him a lot longer to find the next letter.

It does have regular ringtones on it. He and I like our phones to sound like phones, and there are several decent choices. I know nothing about the downloading, etc. because I don't do it.

It fits; it is long enough to reach your ear & mouth at the same time so you don't have to hold it in some precise position to avoid muffling the mic when talking. This also makes a shoulder-hold work nicely (hub doesn't do headsets, either).

It also gets good reception. It always seems to have at least one more bar than other phones in patchy areas (another travel bonus!).

The camera flash is bright and steady. If the camera is set to always use flash, it becomes a handy flashlight with just a press of the side photo button.

Last, the volume settings go high enough for Mr. Half Deaf. It also doesn't pick up too much background noise. It picks up a little - but doesn't amplify it like some, nor does it do that weird silencing in & out thing that a lot of new phones do.

So, it's a good, sturdy phone that is great for people who want it durable & simple.

Pay More Get a Better Phone

Created: 09/05/06
I hated this phone. The phones great in the start. You would be impressed by the features and the price. Don't be fooled this is one of the worst phones I have ever owned. People are right, camera sucks. Battery life... horrible. Matter in fact my wife has the same phone and she already had replaced it once under warrantee. Now however the battery lasts only a few calls and after each call the phone shuts down! Me however I replaced this phone a long time ago after it would randomly shut off on me.
Take my advice, spend a little more money get a better for, you'll be sorry eventually if you buy this one. Oh all of this happened within the first year of having these phones.
