Finally, a durable DVD player for families!!!
Created: 08/07/08
We bought the DVD Player for a plane trip to California. It was great for travel, and now our 8 year old uses it at home, too. The battery life was fine for our needs. We watched one movie on the flight out and still had battery left (by that time, our son wanted to do something else!). We charged the battery again at the hotel, used it several times while we were there, and then saw an entire movie on in it during the flight home. We've had no problems with it, although I was skeptical based on other reviews. It really does seem sturdy, and has had it's share of being bumped around.
One thing to think about when you are purchasing a DVD portable would be how many headphone jacks are on the unit. This one had two, thank goodness, because all three of us wanted to watch!
My son REALLY liked the 30 games that were included in the unit. They are NOT at all as sophisticated as his Nintendo DS, but included more classic arcade style games that were fun to play. It was a nice feature, and we'd never seen a DVD player do that before.
Sound is not very loud, but again, we bought it to specifically use on a plane trip with earphones, so I didn't mind. I mean, it's a small unit, how loud can you really expect it's two tiny speakers to be? If I wanted to use it on, say, a camping trip so that we could all watch a movie, I'd probably want to bring along some external speakers that can be plugged into the earphone jack. The picture quality was good, we didn't have any problems seeing the movies, but I know that there are DVD players with bigger, brighter screens.
I was pleasantly surprised with this DVD player. I know that RCA doesn't sell it anymore, but I applaud the effort that they've made to make a kid-friendly DVD player that is rugged and also has extras like the games. I can see that they were really shooting for the family-thinking market. We considered other kid-specific DVD players, and really, the DVD players made specifically for children are VERY shoddily made, probably to keep the cost low for families who want a disposable DVD player, in case the child loses or beats it up. RCA has at the very least made the greatest strides in a family-friendly DVD player that is more durable, but there is always room for improvement.
If you are looking for a durable DVD player to keep your child busy with for car or plane trips, this is probably one of the best you can find. If you are looking for a DVD player with excellent sound and sleek look, this is probably not for you.

RCA DRC627N 7 in. Portable DVD Player

Well, so far so good! The player is a refurbish, but like I said, so far so good. The screen is crisp, and clear. The main buttons to operate the DVD part are easy to use and understand. It does play rewritable disc just fine, does play original music CD's just fine. The screen being used in the car, mounted on back of seat, is hard to see for two kids. They must wear head phones if they want to hear it well, as the volume is somewhat low, even turned all the way up. My two girls just "share" laps when it comes time to actually use it on a road trip. Battery lasted one whole Mary Poppins movie, and then some:)Disc is securely snapped onto the hub of the player, does'nt wiggle inside when bumped or jostled around. Now for the games, definitely a cute addition, but a joke to actually play them. They are 8 bit, sometimes weird to figure out the control buttons for which game. NO instructions about game play or objective, just play to figure it out! Would be easier to hook up a Ninendo64 on the player than try to enjoy the 30 frustrating games. The parental language feature has to be subscribed to,so I just keep foul, potty mouthed movies out of the player for all my kids:) So far player is durable, works well, serves its purpose. I feel I payed to much for what I actually bought, look for cheaper than 99.00 if you really want one.

Great value

Love, love love this DVD/Game system. My two boys are 3 & 4 yrs old. They are not used to watching movies or playing video games because they are outside all the time. My kids figured out how to play the 30 kid friendly games very quickly and they enjoy watching movies. We orignally made a purchase of just 1 player but then quickly found that the investment into a 2nd one would be well worth it. We have found that the volume is just fine and the picture quality is great. Very durable machine and battery does last pretty decent amount of time. I would recommend this player to someone, especially for doctor office visits (can be so long), road trips and rainy days when you stay inside.

Portable DVD player w/games

My son loves it. The games are not really state of the art but they are simple to use and since there are 30 games, it keeps him busy when the movie if finished. I charge the battery the night before we go on a trip and the battery will last thru a 2 1/2 hour movie and several games before it gives up. Great durability. Needs a remote. Only problem we have is when we stop the movie when we make a pit-stop while on the road, we have a trouble getting it to come back on and play. It has a great clear screen, the sound is not great, wish it would go louder, but when you use the headphones you can hear better. I use a pair of noise cancelling ear phones(worth the price)and you have no distractions, not even outside noise from the vehicle. I rate this product as good because it does more than play a dvd.

I put it threw its paces

Well to tell you the truth it is basically a good unit compact and versatile easy to use once you get it programmed . the instruction manual is just fair and the explanations are just OK but looking at it as an electronics novice ....I would suggest some improvements and better illustrations.
the "HOW TO USE THE FEATURES" Is really lacking.
The unit itself performs well especially in viewing commercially made dvds but don't look for any great picture quality on your personal pictures unless you have a really great camera .I like the size and the battery quality . The audio is as good as can be expected from one this size. All in all not bad and great for travel and personal amusement.
