Album NotesIn a sense, Authenticity might be viewed as a companion to Relativity, which was a duo between Futterman and guitarist Jimmy Williams recorded just a couple of days earlier. For this one, the group expands to the trio format, with the addition of bassist William Parker. Parker's presence gives the music a different hue, adding a harmonic anchor and freeing Futterman to spread his wings on his curved soprano, which gets equal billing with his frenetic piano improvisations. The heart of the album is the two parts of "Authenticity," which, taken together, contain more than fifty minutes of often intense, absorbing, and sometimes spectacular playing. All three musicians mesh remarkably well, creating a sense of oneness through highly individual, abstract approaches. The dense results contrast with the diverse moods and playful virtuosity, leading to a passionate quilt of layered sounds. The unusual instrumentation (electric guitar, string bass, and piano/curved soprano saxophone) refreshes. ~ Steven Loewy
