A Guilty Pleasure but no extras on this DVD
Created: 01/01/07
I owned the VHS version of this film and am an Richard Gere fan and lover of romantic films. I am in the process of buying all my favorite films which I own on VHS to DVD now which is why I bought this DVD. A guilty pleasure for sure. I think Winona Ryder's voice is very annoying in this film. Her character at times is down right obnoxious. Still I enjoyed this love story. There are no extras on this DVD like a director's commentary or interviews. I think Director Joan Chen was embarassed by the film critic's bad reviews of her film when this came out in theatrical release so she decided not to do a director's commentary. I think this was/ is a mistake. The film is beautifully shot and has a European/Asian look to the film that I find very appealing. I would have loved to know more about the details ( back story of this film). If you like Richard Gere, good cinematography and New York City, you will like this film. By the way, this is really a fairytale. Anyone who has been involved with a womanizer ( the character Richard Gere plays) knows, they never change.

A May-December romance. He's 48, on the cover of New York magazine, an upscale restaurateur, and a womanizer who rejects ideas of love. She's 22, living with her grandmother, artistic, facing a tumor that's life-threatening, which she tells him about the morning after their first night, when he tells her not to expect permanence from him. Will finds Charlotte unprecedented and unpredictable, and experiences feelings of love, but she packs him off when he's casually unfaithful. He's stung, and he's also flummoxed by the appearance of a young woman from his past. Can he convince Charlotte to take him back, and can he help her through her illness and change his irresponsible ways?

I am a real fan of Richard Gere. I had never even heard of this movie let alone seen it until last evening after receiving it on a purchase through eBay and I sat down to watch it. It was a wonderful movie. It is a movie that teaches you about "love" and its commitment. Winona Ryder plays an excellent part - she has such beautiful brown eyes and when she cries it melted my heart. Anyway, this movie also shows that when you are sick and the Dear Lord has decided it is time for you to "come home", even the best of the best doctor's in the world cannot save you when it isn't meant to be. Awesome! Jeanne

For a chick-flick this one is FIRST RATE

OK, I'm an older single guy so the theme of the movie appealed to me. I missed it at the box office in 2000, didn't almost everyone? Winnie is great and did quite well alongside Gere. This would make a great date-movie, but probably is best as a genuine chick-flick, i.e., guys won't want it for themselves. The movie DVD itself (this one) had a widescreen / standard screen side but no subtitles. My HDMI input doesn't read closed captioning so I missed some of the quieter lines. Winnie's put-downs of Gere are well-delivered & really funny.
